No vacation, few shopping opportunities, but a lot of home office – during the corona pandemic, many people in Germany discovered their love for animals. And to the delight of the industry, they are spending more money on it.
Within a year, the number of dogs, cats, budgies and other animal roommates in German households rose by almost one million. The industry association for pet supplies and the central association of zoological companies in Germany have determined. Almost 35 million pets now live in Germany.
The industry also notices this in sales of feed and accessories. For cat food alone, consumers in Germany spent almost 1.7 billion euros, an increase of more than five percent compared to the previous year. In addition, there was just under 1.6 billion euros for dog food. The biggest growth driver was « snacks » with which dog and cat owners like to reward their darlings.
The most popular pet in Germany in 2020 was again the cat – around 17.5 million cats live in German households. There were also 10.7 million dogs, 5 million small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs or mice and 3.5 million ornamental birds.
