(CNN) – Name a better pet than Curly. We will wait.
The brave dog saved his owner from the fire of a house that destroyed part of his home in South Carolina.
Brian Rand told WJCL, a CNN affiliate, that he found his best friend in an animal shelter three years ago.
“From the beginning, he joined me,” he told the news station. “He chose me.”
Rand, a Vietnam veteran, lives alone and woke up on Monday morning after his dog began to prick him with his nose, said the Fire Department of the City of Beaufort / City of Port Royal.
“I got up and started walking, as soon as I walked down the hall the house was too full of smoke,” he told the news station. “Then I saw the flames through the side window.”
Rand was able to leave the house with Curly and call 911, the fire department said. Authorities were able to save some of their belongings, including their war medals, WJCL reported.
Now, Rand says his house looks like a “disaster.” Fire damage was extensive, the affiliate said.
“I forgot how it used to be (the house),” said the veteran.
But both went well.
So, we are not saying that adopting a dog could save your life but … it could.
