Crafty Ponies big winner of Horses Product of the Year election – Insurance for Pets

Crafty Ponies horse cuddle + instruction booklet was named overall winner of the Horses Product of the Year election tonight. At the festive award ceremony at Van der Valk Hotel Apeldoorn-De Cantharel, this educational horse hug emerged as the best product of all 63 nominated products and services. « The quality exudes from it, a great concept, » the jury said.

Category Services & Knowledge

Crafty Ponies horse hug + instruction booklet first came out as the best in the Services & Knowledge category. When the overall winner was announced from all ten category winners, Rob Wip, the man behind Crafty Ponies Netherlands, was once again allowed to take the podium.
With Crafty Ponies, children can learn more about ponies and horses in a playful way. This is done through realistic miniature horse hugs, grooming and equipment sets, but also with the help of online videos and pony lessons in the Crafty Ponies Pony Club. The public thinks this product is a wonderful way to introduce children to the care and treatment of horses in a playful way. The enthusiastic professional jury gave Crafty Ponies a unanimous ten for innovation and appearance.

“Wow! Really incredibly cool! ”, Responds Rob Wip, the man behind Crafty Ponies Netherlands. “Our horse hugs are focused on knowledge, to teach children from an early age how to deal with horses. We focus a lot on safety. We have spent months and months making everything right. Because we want to teach children everything the right way! It is very cool to win these prizes with that now! ”

The book « Think first, then save! » Came in second in this category. In this book, former firefighter Harko Kwakernaat shares his forty years of experience in rescuing horses from emergencies. The public finds this book groundbreaking with practice-oriented information and the jury praises it for its employability and innovative character.
Find your Buitenrit, a platform for finding and reserving outrides, came third.

Category Training

Team by Jill, the online platform of international Grand Prix rider Jill Huijbregts, won the award in the Training category. Through instructional videos, Jill Huijbregts gives online dressage training for anyone who wants to develop in equestrian sports, from beginner to Grand Prix. The public is enthusiastic about its educational videos with clear explanations. The jury judges this service as a well-applied concept in the dressage world with broad accessibility.

Jill Huijbregts appears on stage with a big smile. “I’m not used to telling anything without a horse! I started as a little girl at the riding school and eventually, through a very big dream, I grew up as an international rider. Very often I was asked if I wanted to teach other riders. And that is why I came up with something that is very widely accessible and educational for the general public. «

One Switch Equestrian Coaching coaches riders from all disciplines in the field of equestrian vitality and thus achieved second place. With guidance in the field of rider-specific training, nutrition, work-rest ratio and mental well-being, the enthusiastic One Switch team makes a difference for riders on both a technical and personal level. The jury therefore considers this service to be a good, affordable supplement for riders.
Third came SURE FOOT Equine Stability Pads, an innovative way to increase the balance and movement of your horse. By placing the horse on different SURE FOOT stability / balance pads, a new consciousness is activated in the horse’s brain.

Category From the tack room – saddles

The Graziozo saddle with pelvic analysis is the best in the category From the tack room saddles. This innovative dressage saddle has been developed to create an optimal pelvic position and mobility. Together with the physiotherapist / pelvic specialist, a computer pelvic analysis can be made to gain a better insight into where the points for improvement lie. And the specially developed tree contributes to more freedom of movement for the horse. Consumers are very enthusiastic about the service and notice a positive difference in their own attitude. The professional jury finds the saddle with the analysis a great combination.

“A good start to your sitting starts with your saddle and the balance and stability of you as a rider. That is why we have involved the flexchair with the Graziozo saddles to make the saddle fit perfectly. Of course we also adjust the saddle to the horse to complete the puzzle ”, says co-developer, physical therapist and Heavy Tour rider Dimphy van Oss.

Dressage saddle Rococco was the number two in this category. This saddle has a high positioned knee and thighs to support the rider even better. To maximize the comfort of the horse, the tree has been developed according to the latest knowledge. Consumers praise this saddle for its good location and beautiful finish. The jury believes that the broader twist responds to the demand of many combinations.
Third came Build My Baines, an application that gives you as a rider the opportunity to compile your handmade Frank Baines saddle completely yourself.

Category From the tack room – other

In the category From the tack room – other, the anatomical bar and bar bridle Equitus Gamma received the highest rating. The curved noseband bypasses the sensitive nerve at the head. The bite bit is attached to the noseband with a button nail and the rod is attached to the extended baking pieces, so that the bits lie more stable in the horse’s mouth. The public is very enthusiastic about this contribution to horse welfare. The jury believes that this anatomical bridle has a beautiful appearance and appreciates the innovative cooperation with the faculty in Berlin during the development.

“The anatomical bridle bridle is already known, and we also wanted to realize this with a bar and bridle bridle. That is more complicated than with a bridle bridle and we have developed this bridle together with the faculty in Berlin, « said Patrick Jurriens, representative of Schockemöhle Sports.

The Kettner Clip was second in this category. This innovative bridle number tightens itself securely by simply sliding the clip onto the cover or the bridle. A nice and solid product, according to jury and public.
Third was the bridle TB Pro, which is designed to minimize strain on the horse’s head.

Category Care – health

Werkman BLACK was head and shoulders above the other products in the Healthcare – Health category. With this mobile gait analysis system for farriers it is possible to monitor gait change over a horse over time. High-precision sensors digitally record the smallest hoof movements and convert them into a 3D animation with easy-to-interpret overviews. Both the public and the jury label Werkman BLACK as a valuable addition to the farrier.

Christel Werkman: “With this we think we have a revolution for farriers. It has been developed together with farriers and has therefore become very easy to use. «

High Power Laser, a device with which high power laser therapy can be carried out, took second place. The use of red and infrared light can promote the recovery of wounds and injuries and alleviate chronic or acute pain. The jury believes that this laser has a good price-quality ratio.
Third was the Magnetic blanket of Magnetic Healthcare. The magnets in this blanket are stitched in the neck and back around important muscle groups, which can improve blood circulation. The jury is enthusiastic about the quality of this magnetic blanket.

Category Care – other

The Kettner Plaiting Kit is very useful if you are braiding your horse and is therefore the winner of the Other care category. This handmade braid bag made of genuine cow leather is a handy solution for anyone who wants to braid his horse easily and quickly, because you have it practically at hand. Consumers call this braid bag practical and fashionable and the jury describes it as an efficient product.

“I really did not expect to win! Many people put their horse’s braids in their pockets and then they lose things or fall to the ground. The Plaiting Kit has all the handy compartments for all braid stuff, with which you can work very well, « says Elise Kettner.

Leovet Leather care product, a very complete leather care line, finished second. The products from this line are free from petroleum and contain high-quality fats and oils to ensure that the leather remains smooth and beautiful. The jury is enthusiastic about the focus on sustainability.

Category Equestrian equipment

The award in the Equestrian Equipment category went to uvex elexxion. The built-in shell and hardshell are the two most important technologies in this riding helmet, creating a lightweight helmet with the highest impact resistance. The helmet’s individually adjustable shield ventilation system keeps your head cool and is an absolute lightweight at 460 grams. The audience is very enthusiastic about the light weight, the good fit and the good quality. The jury finds it interesting how two techniques merge into one helmet and describes the product as a safe, beautiful helmet with a good price-quality ratio.

Patrick Jurriens, representative of uvex: “This helmet has only been on the market for about four months and is already very well received. Great to also win this prize! ”

Second place in this category was also won by a product from uvex, namely the crx 700 glove. The functional materials on the palm ensure high functionality while driving. Thanks to the Schoeller® softshell, these riding gloves are ideal in wind, humidity and cold. Consumers praise these gloves for their good grip.
Quick Jodphurs & Easy Chaps from Sergio Grasso finished third. This riding footwear is environmentally friendly and made with innovative, high-quality and non-animal materials.

Category In and around the stable

In the category In and around the barn, the Aqua2Go mobile competition shower won the prize. An ideal shower for taking summers with you on competitions, but also for spraying your horse with warm water in the winter. Thanks to the adjustable spray position, the Aqua2Go can be used for both the horse, the driving cart and trailer. Consumers find the product super handy and user-friendly. The jury finds the shower very well thought out and innovative.

“A little hobby of mine created this product. And now it has become a very handy shower for competitions! ”, Says Alfred Mulder, who is standing on the stage smiling.

In second place is the Dekenhoes, which was developed to protect a horse blanket against dirt, moisture and to minimize the spread of diseases and fungi. There are two models: one for the blanket racks on larger stables and one for the suspension brackets mounted on barn doors or in the trailer. Consumers are happy that the blankets with this product remain dust-free, clean and tidy.
The MAYO Horse mattress became third. With this hygienic surface, substantial savings on the costs of the litter are possible. The soft structure and compressibility of MAYO products offer maximum grip in all circumstances.

Category Supplements

The award in the Supplements category came in the name of Phytonics Gluco balance. This supplement focuses on healthy sugar management. In horses with a lot of fat storage, always hungry and never satisfied or having to be in the danger zone, the glucose balance is possible, due to an excess of sugars in food. Gluco balance can help to get the sugar balance in the body back in the right direction. It contains herbs, minerals and vitamins for a good function of the stomach and pancreas and supports the cleansing effect of the liver, the hormonal balance and the conversion processes in the body. Consumers are enthusiastic about the results achieved. The professional jury calls the supplement a proven product with good results.

“We see that horses get a lot of sugars through food and grass. This supplement can be regulated better with this supplement. It ensures that the glucose can be better absorbed into the cells, « says Irene Rol, the director / owner of Phytonics (NML Health).

Bonpard Resistance won second place in this category. This supplement has been specially developed for horses that lack resistance, such as horses with itching, skin bumps, mug, eczema or an autumn dip. Bonpard Resistance has been compiled on the basis of scientific knowledge by veterinarian and animal nutrition specialist Anneke Hallebeek. Consumers have many positive user experiences and appreciate the scientific basis. The jury points out the social relevance by guarantee via the vet as a positive point.
Natural’Digest, a prebiotic that is used for an improved intestinal flora, came third. This supplement acts as a buffer in the stomach, which reduces stomach ulcers.

Category Enter

Pavo FiberBeet was unbeatable in the Feed category. Pavo FiberBeet has been specially developed for conditional horses and ponies. It is a carefully assembled combination of SpeediBeet (beet pulp flakes), alfalfa and highly digestible fibers from soybean hulls with a touch of Fenugreek (fenugreek) for the palatability. The product is completely grain-free and also contains a very low sugar and starch content. The public describes Pavo FiberBeet as a high-quality product that is quick and easy to prepare. The jury appreciates that the product is very well developed in consultation with the target group and also sees the quick preparation as an advantage.

“FiberBeet has been developed to bring horses back to weight in a healthy way. Because we have a lot to do with older horses that are difficult to maintain their weight and suffer from sugars ”, says content manager at Pavo Liselotte Bosch and food advisor Ragne Verhoeven.

OerBalans became second in the Feed category. This product is full of herbs, vitamins and minerals for your horse. They contain fibers and substances that support digestive processes, waste disposal and the overall metabolism. Consumers notice that horses are literally better in their own skin and fur and use it as a nice addition. The jury also sees it as a good product.
EquilinGROW – « Feeding the new » became third. Current statistics on horses with colic, stomach ulcers and stereotyped behavior confirm that at least 1.5% of the body weight in dry matter (DS) of fiber / roughage per day must be given to prevent this. From the age of one year, horses have no extra need for energy, with sufficient suitable roughage. There is, however, a need for easily absorbable minerals, good proteins, natural vitamin E and probiotics, which EquilinGROW provides.

Nestlé: dividend increase of over 10% is strongest since 2010 – buy it! Stock Analysis (Vontobel Research) | Shares of the day – Insurance for Pets

Zurich ( – Nestlé stock analysis by analyst Jean-Philippe Bertschy from Vontobel Research:

Jean-Philippe Bertschy, stock analyst at Vontobel Research, continues to advise in a recent stock analysis to buy the share of the food company Nestlé S.A. (ISIN: CH0038863350, WKN: A0Q4DC, ticker symbol: NESR, SIX Swiss Ex: NESN, Nasdaq OTC symbol: NSRGF).

Organic growth met expectations: 3.5% organic growth with a RIG of 2.9% and a price level of 0.6%. Except for the Waters division, which had a strong 4Q, all regions and departments had met analyst expectations with regard to RIG and prices.

Margin +60 bp: This corresponds to the analyst’s forecast. Here, too, there are hardly any differences compared to given analyst expectations; the exception is Waters, where there has been a slight decline offset by PetCare’s continued strong profitability. The underlying EPS forecast increased by 11.1% in constant W., a strong performance.

Only cash is true: The strong free cash flow rose by 10.9% to a record level of 11.9 billion or 12.9% of sales, an increase of 250 bp compared to the FY17. Main reasons: more effective investments and an inflow of working capital (VontE: outflow). The ROIC rose by 20 bp to 12.3%.

All projects on track: Sale of the US ice cream business on January 31 completed (analyst forecast: March 31); Exit from the US DSD business (pizza and ice cream) six months earlier than planned.

Outlook for 2020: Increase in organic sales growth (against consensus expectations of 3.9%), margin improvement (consensus: +60 bp), restructuring costs of CHF 500 million; it was too early to quantify the financial impact of the coronavirus.

Investors could now focus on slightly lower organic growth and the operating profit margin. Bertschy would rather highlight the underlying sustainable improvements over the past year. All projects are on track. Since 2017, over 50 transactions have been carried out, which corresponds to 12% of sales and a contribution of 35 bp to organic growth in FY19: This demonstrates highly efficient portfolio management. In addition, Nestlé anticipates a stable free cash flow as a percentage of sales of 12% and an ROIC that will increase towards 15%. The case is far from being discussed.

Jean-Philippe Bertschy, Vontobel Research stock analyst, confirms his « buy » rating for the Nestlé stock. The target price was CHF 116.00. (Analysis from February 13th, 2020)

The RN flirts with animal friends – Insurance for Pets

Marine Le Pen on a market, February 8, 2020, in Saint-André-de-Cubzac. – UGO AMEZ / SIPA

  • In its program common to all its candidates in the municipal elections, the National Gathering proposes to establish a mutual insurance company for pets at reduced prices.
  • If the measure is out of place among the RN’s program for municipalities, focused on taxation and security, Marine Le Pen’s party has nonetheless taken hold of the animal cause for a few years, in particular since 2016.
  • By talking to animal friends, the RN addresses a large reservoir of voices, and supports an evolution of society, more sensitive to animal welfare.

Marine Le Pen’s party, which is lacking in local roots, takes municipal elections very seriously. To conquer beyond the ten cities it has managed since 2014, the National Gathering is focusing in particular on animals, or rather their owners. Unveiled during the presentation of the movement’s strategy for the ballot on January 12, an explosive proposal among the program common to all aspiring RN mayors. Between promises not to increase local taxes and to fight crime, the party thus undertakes to negotiate a mutual insurance company for pets, which would be offered to citizens at prices below those of the market. This measure allows him to target a potential electorate of several million people, with a consensual theme.

A Poitevin initiative

The idea was born in Buxerolles, in the northern suburbs of Poitiers, in September, and more precisely in the mind of Arnaud Fage, head of the RN list at the municipal level. « Going door to door, I found that many people were suffering from isolation, and that their companion was a pet. This comes at a cost, and these isolated people often have little or no means, ”says the nurse.

The 30-year-old then imagines, on the model of municipal mutuals, to negotiate for his constituents, if he becomes mayor, a grouped tariff for animal mutual insurance. « The town hall plays the role of intermediary, it negotiates the tariff, subscribes, but it is not there to pay for the insurance. It costs zero euros, just the cost of a form to survey residents and find out how many are interested, « said the 30-year-old owner of five cats.

A voice reservoir

What he did by distributing a thousand leaflets in the town of 10,000 inhabitants in October.

The initiative did not go unnoticed at the RN. In November, during a meeting at HQ in Nanterre, Arnaud Fage, as departmental manager for Vienne, presented his campaign promise to Marine Le Pen, who also lives with several cats. « She thought it was a great idea and asked me to show her my leaflets, my visuals, » remembers the RN executive. The promise of a mutual for animals was finally found in the joint program for the municipal authorities, and defended by all the RN candidates, in Maubeuge or
Quimper for example.

The potential voice reservoir certainly has a lot to do with it. « One in two households has at least one pet, » recalls Daniel Boy, director of research at Sciences Po Paris. « It is an electorate whose sociology is very varied, and which the parties do not address, with the exception of the Animalist Party and environmentalists. » More broadly, six out of ten French people say that measures for the animal cause would encourage them to vote for a municipal candidate, according to a survey carried out in January by Ifop for the 30 million Friends Foundation. The party thus follows « an evolution of society, more attentive to questions related to animal welfare, which are more publicized », observes the researcher.
The breakthrough of the very young Animalist Party in the European elections in May 2019 illustrates this development.

Marine Le Pen, animal lover

Without counting the benefits in terms of image: « defending the animal cause can also participate in a form of demonization because the subject is consensual and sympathetic », underlines Daniel Boy.

For several years, the president of RN has put forward (and staged) her love for animals (and especially cats), both in her positions and her pages on social networks. « I see how much she loves animals, » says Annika Bruna, MEP, who « personally » knows the president of RN. « She has a special affection for cats and in fact has several in her home. » Presidential candidate, she had also dedicated part of her

program in 2017 for « animal welfare », which she wanted to make a « national priority ». The theme also makes it possible to approach very political subjects: it is by denouncing « animal suffering » that Marine Le Pen takes it out on
« Halal slaughter » and « the import of agricultural products that do not meet French animal welfare standards ».

For the municipal election, the RN relies more on pets than on questions of breeding or pesticides. « This is a more consensual theme, which does not offend the agricultural electorate, » adds Daniel Boy. « We can take voices without losing them ». Sunday, Marine Le Pen announced on Twitter to support the creation of shelters for stray cats for municipal. « Our mayors have set an example in terms of animal welfare, » says Annika Bruna, citing an open refuge in Hayange and Villers-Cotterêts, or an educational farm in Mantes-la-ville.

But other parties are also taking up this theme. On February 6, the president of the Ile-de-France region, the ex-LR Valérie Pécresse, presented a plan for animals, providing for « a permit to adopt », financial aid for shelters or dedicated spaces for pets and an “animal friendly city” label. « We have been defending the animal cause for a long time and not only in the context of municipal elections, » says Annika Bruna. At RN, they claim to have been « avant-garde in this field ».

Insurance for Pets

can pets transmit the disease? – Insurance for Pets

According to the WHO, « there is no evidence » that dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus. Experts interviewed by franceinfo confirm that crossing the « species barrier » is rare.

They are collateral victims of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus epidemic. In China and especially in Wuhan, pets have been abandoned by their owners. These dogs and cats have been locked up for days in their house or apartment, left to their own devices. Their owners have largely left for the Lunar New Year holidays and the quarantine imposed on the megalopolis prevents them from returning.

The Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association reports on its Facebook page that it has already rescued more than 600 of these pets. Volunteers sometimes display treasures of ingenuity to help them.

But at the same time, the rumor of dogs and cats killed in the middle of the street for fear that they would transmit the disease has spread on social networks, bloody photos in support. The images of dogs with a protective mask on the muzzle are increasing. Faced with psychosis, a question arises: can pets be infected with this new coronavirus and in turn contaminate the humans with whom they keep company?

A major obstacle stands in the way of the virus: « the species barrier », explains to franceinfo Olivier Bouchaud, doctor in the service of infectious and tropical diseases of the Avicenne hospital in Bobigny. « This barrier is not insurmountable, since it is likely that an animal is at the origin of the transmission [du coronavirus 2019-nCoV] to the man, Recognizes the doctor.

According to a hypothesis on which Chinese scientists are working, but which remains to be confirmed, the new coronavirus could come from a bat and a small mammal, the pangolin, could have played the intermediary between the bat and the man. Stay, insist Olivier Bouchaud, that« it takes a succession of special and rare conditions for this [franchissement de la barrière d’espèce] is possible « .

Olivier Bouchaud therefore considers it unlikely that an apartment dog or cat will transmit the virus to its owner. « At the individual level, being contaminated by your pet seems all the less possible since it should already have been able to be in contact with an infected person with crossing the barrier ‘in the other direction' », notes the doctor.

Like their owners, pets are certainly not immune to viral diseases. But they generally do not catch the same, underlines Anne Goffard, virologist at the Lille University Hospital and researcher at the Institut Pasteur de Lille.

Coronaviruses exist in cats and dogs, but until today, they did not infect humans.Anne Goffardat franceinfo

And the expert to continue: « For the moment, human coronaviruses do not pass into pets. «  « SARS has been isolated from wild animals – civets – sold in Chinese markets, but not from domestic animals », recalls Anne-Claude Crémieux, infectious disease specialist at the Saint-Louis hospital in Paris.

« In order for pets to be infected, they would have to have the same cellular receptor that interacts with the binding domain of 2019-Ncov « , develops Samira Fafi-Kremer, head of the virology laboratory at Strasbourg university hospitals. However, says the expert, in the case of the new coronavirus, this entry point for infection in the body may well be the same in humans and certain animals, according to recent research ( here, here and there).

« Very recently, Chinese and American researchers have reported that the human cell receptor for nCoV is an enzyme called ACE2 which interacts with the surface protein of the virus and which allows infection of human cells », details the specialist. Gold, « It would appear that the binding sites on ACE2 specific to nCoV are the same as those present in other animals such as pigs and cats ».

Samira Fafi-Kremer therefore concludes that« based on these data from the literature, these animals can be infected and transmit to humans or vice versa « . So the risk exists in theory but no case has been found to verify it. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not yet agree with this conclusion.

There is currently no evidence that pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus.World Health Organizationin his advice to the general public

At this stage, the WHO therefore indicates rather than« it is always good to wash your hands with soap and water after contact with pets « . Not to guard against the new coronavirus, but because it « protects against various common bacteria » such as Escherichia coli and salmonella « who can go from pets to humans ». But as Samira Fafi-Kremer reminds us, « still it is necessary that the man or his animal meets the virus » and nCoV-2019 « does not circulate in France ».

Ban on trade in wild animals can limit coronavirus outbreak – Insurance for Pets

The Party for the Animals wants a ban on the import of exotic animals and animal products to prevent the spread of viruses such as the corona virus to Europe. The question is how useful that is.

The whole world was shocked by the outbreak of the new corona virus. Nearly 25,000 people worldwide have now been infected, and around 500 patients have died from the effects of the disease. Every few years a potentially very dangerous new virus is emerging. SARS, MERS, ebola; they are all particularly contagious diseases that can end fatally. What all these viruses have in common with the current culprit is that they have passed from animals to humans. And there is a good chance that this will happen more often in the future.

‘We are increasingly finding ourselves in the habitat of wild animals’

« There is much more contact between humans and animals nowadays. That also increases the chance of transmitting animal viruses, » says Eric Snijder, professor of molecular virology in Leiden. « All animal species carry their own set of viruses. Until recently there was not much going on. But now that we are with more and more people, we are increasingly entering the habitat of wild animal species. We are moving en masse into the jungle to view them, we sometimes process them in medicines or serve them as a meal. That also increases the risk of infection to humans. «

In China, the government has now temporarily banned food markets where wild animals are traded. A growing number of Chinese citizens also want an end to the unsanitary markets. Good news, according to the Party for the Animals, not only for the well-being of humans but also for the well-being of many vulnerable animal species.

Cover for illegal trade

« Despite their protection status, many wild animals can still be traded as normal. We have been arguing for a total ban for years, » said MP Wassenberg of the PvdD. « It is not for nothing that the animals are protected and legal trade is the ideal cover for illegally trading the rarest and most vulnerable animals. This not only causes animals to die out, it is also a great risk to public health. »

Today, the House of Representatives is discussing the fight against infectious diseases. The Party for the Animals calls on the Dutch government to stop the import of exotic animals and animal products from abroad to prevent the spread of viruses such as the corona virus. The party also wants the Dutch government to ask China to convert the temporary ban on food markets into a permanent status.

Minimal chance of infection in the Netherlands

Molecular virologist Snijder has reservations about the Party for the Animals call. « I understand the intention, certainly because it is also about animal welfare. But the chance of infection in the Netherlands by imported animals or animal products is really minimal. »

He said: « The situation is different for the local situation in China. Limiting contact with wild animals can be the key to limit the chance of this type of outbreaks. »

Upon request, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that it sees a task for itself and other international organizations with regard to better prevention of infectious diseases.

« We are currently investigating the exact source of the new corona virus outbreak. As soon as this is clear, we will – together with other organizations – advise China on how to prevent an outbreak in the future. » The WHO wants to collaborate more intensively with national Food and Consumer Product Authorities.

4 Tips to arm your home against the weather – Insurance for Pets

MEDEMBLIK – Sun, rain, wind, hail and frost: your house and garden have a lot to endure throughout the year. Do you want to know how you can best protect your home against the elements of nature? Below you will find four useful tips.

Choose sun blinds

With summers getting warmer, sun protection is not a superfluous luxury. After all, nothing is more annoying than lying awake because your bedroom looks like a sauna. Thanks to sun protection, it is quickly around 5 to 7 degrees cooler in the house. Therefore choose sunscreens or sunscreens for your home, or place a sunshade with articulated arm if you also want to immediately create a shady spot in the garden. You can of course enjoy yourself here, but also your pets and some plants will be grateful for this cool spot in the open air.

Install shutters

Roller shutters have several advantages. First of all, it protects your home against storm and hail damage. In addition, roller shutters act as sun blinds and help to insulate your windows (reducing the amount of cold coming in). Moreover, roller shutters not only help to protect your home against nature, but also against burglars. Finally, roller shutters give you a bit of privacy and have a sound-dampening effect. This is very practical if you live in the middle of the city or along a busy road.

Go for insulation

Insulating your house properly reduces the amount of cold coming in considerably. This is of course not only comfortable for you and your family members; your heating costs are also considerably reduced. Check all windows, doors and cracks and invest in double glazing and extra insulation. Consider carefully which type of insulation best suits your home. In some homes you save the most with cavity wall insulation, while in other homes roof or floor insulation is the most advantageous.

Don’t forget the garden

Not only do you have to protect your home against nature, the garden also needs attention. Especially with frost it is wise to walk an extra round through the garden. Check here whether all external faucets are closed and protect your plants against the cold. This way you can put some plants in the shed better. In addition, a layer of leaves over your plants also provides a good protective layer to protect against the cold.

Key market trends

Growing tendency of smaller families to favor the adoption of pets

Rapid urbanization in the major developing countries of the world has led to an increasing preference of couples for smaller families. The growing urban nature of society, which results in the separation of farm animals from nature, stimulates the desire to bring pets home. Due to the social comfort, the business, the security and the aesthetic sense offered by the pets, the tendency to the adoption of pets increases. A high standard of living, an expensive health care system and high levels of education have led to a decrease in the number of children and an increase in the adoption of pets, such as dogs, cats and the birds. This trend, in turn, is expected to drive growth in the veterinary pet diet market in the long term. The pet population exceeds that of children in several countries, such as Brazil and Japan. Pets are adopted and treated as family members due to changing demographic trends, such as delayed marriages and lower fertility rates. For example, the current fertility rate in Brazil is 1.77 children per woman and is expected to fall to 1.66 children per woman by 2060, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This increases the demand for pets as well as pet / veterinary products, which in turn contributes to the growth of the market being studied.

North America dominates the global market

According to the 2017-2018 American Pet Product Association Pet Ownership Survey, 68% of American households own a pet and spend an average of $ 300 per year on pet food and treats. As North America is responsible for 31% of the world’s pet food production, coupled with the huge demand for pet care, this is boosting the US market for pet diets. The main distribution channels through which the United States provides pet food are mass retail stores, pet superstores, online sales, niche specialists, grocery chains, pharmacies and agricultural supply stores. According to Packaged Facts’ first quarter 2018 online survey in the United States, pet owners with online sales of pet food are the main driver of the market, contributing to 14 % of pet consumers buy in the past 7 days and the remaining 31% in the past 30 days. The US pet market is very concentrated with a few major players, such as Nestlé, Mars, Big Heart, Colgate and Blue Buffalo. Blue Buffalo has entered the therapeutic pet food market, where Colgate-Palmolive has a 60% market share in specific pet health issues. In addition, 16% of American households buy pet food containing pre / probiotic ingredients, which stimulates the market for pet diets in the United States.

Competitive landscape

The results of the market share analysis for veterinary pet diets indicate a partially fragmented market, with the main market players accounting for around 45% of the market while the remaining 55% is allocated to various small businesses and private labels. Mars Inc. and Nestlé SA represent the majority of the market through their brands Royal Canin and Purina Petcare, respectively. Companies such as Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Nisshin Pet Food also play a major role in the market, either by developing problem-specific products or by dominating the veterinary diet market in a particular region. Companies such as Farmina Pet Foods and Blue Buffalo Pet Products are relatively new to the market, but have had a huge impact on the market and have therefore been involved in various strategic movements,

Insurance for Pets

David Jaw of Trupanion uses machine learning to facilitate better animal care – Insurance for Pets

Many people have a project for which they are attracted or consider themselves particularly good. As head of the data science department at Trupanion in Seattle, David Jaw’s projects are actually about pets.

Jaw, the latest Geek of the week from., Uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate pet insurance claims, streamlining the process and eliminating the worry of what is covered or no.

Born and raised in a suburb near Toronto, Jaw’s family moved to Albuquerque, N.M., at the age of 13. He stayed there at university, where he studied mechanical engineering, pursuing a childhood dream of designing planes and spacecraft.

« Two or three years after the undergraduate, I realized that my peers could take aerospace courses in less than half the time, with better quality than me, » said Jaw. « This relationship has been reversed for math and numerical calculation classes. I decided to focus on a path that came more naturally to me. «

Current artificial intelligence applications generally accomplish their task of formulating a recommendation. Imagine a time when we will have enough confidence in our models to allow physical action.

Jaw moved for a year or two after college, living on poker winnings.

« Poker started as a solution to a short-term problem, » said Jaw. « I worked 30 to 35 hours a week in a call center for the first half of my undergraduate years. My grades were zero and my social life was nonexistent. When one of my friends won $ 15,000 in an online poker tournament, I asked him for advice, read a few books, and quickly turned online poker into a constant source of income. «

Jaw made twice as much playing poker as he did at this call center, and he stayed with him during his 20 years. He even spent a year playing poker full time as an experience.

« The earnings were higher than a typical engineering job, but not by a margin large enough to compensate for the disadvantages of an irregular work schedule and lack of job satisfaction, » he said. declared. “No regrets, however. I came out of the experience with greater mental resilience and a group of lifelong friends. «

Graduating and beating people at a card game no longer did it for Jaw and he wanted something new when he moved to Seattle with his wife now. He turned his attention to data science and a job at Trupanion.

« It didn’t take long to notice the opportunity of machine learning to have a significant impact at Trupanion, » he said. « We have a strong culture around high fidelity information gathering and a great data warehouse team that runs on our principles every day. The barriers we face as a data science team are interesting and satisfying. We answer questions like “How do we replicate the thinking processes of our people?” Rather than “How do I access the data to get started?” ”

Learn more about this week’s Geek of the Week, David Jaw:

What are you doing and why are you doing it? I started and currently head the data science department at Trupanion.

Pet medical insurance has a relatively low adoption in our country (1%) compared to Europe and Australia (20% +). We believe this is due in part to the awkward claims process. Even if the pet owner has insurance, veterinary bills are paid in advance and bills are submitted for reimbursement. The average processing time is measured in weeks.

In April 2018, we rolled out a series of machine learning models that fully emulate the role of a claims adjuster. Each independent thought process that goes into human decision-making gets its own code repository and its own model endpoint. These modular models then feed an « aggregator » which merges all the relevant information into a final result.

Today, we automate 40% of claims submitted through our software at 99% accuracy and an average end-to-end execution time of 6 seconds. Pet owners can now settle complaints before leaving the reception desk. We have removed the need for policyholders to pay out of pocket, and we have removed the uncertainty of not knowing what is covered and what is not. Our claims team can now spend their time investigating complex and interesting situations that use their medical knowledge. Easy decisions are automated. No one has lost their job as a result of this change.

We believe that all animals should receive the best veterinary care. No pet owner should have to make treatment decisions taking into account the financial burden.

What is the most important thing people should know about your field? Most of us seem to overestimate the long term effects of machine learning (deadly sensitive AI) and underestimate the short and medium term benefits.

Current artificial intelligence applications generally accomplish their task of formulating a recommendation. Imagine a time when we will have enough confidence in our models to allow physical action. Rather than seeing a suggested link to a dinner recipe, you can go home to do the grocery shopping and have a meal cooked just to your liking. Rather than going to a clinic every year for a flu shot, it could be delivered by a flying needle robot just before an outbreak. Mental resources will be released to pursue areas of interest with deeper attention and dedication. Large-scale machine learning should be a force multiplier for our civilization.

Where do you find your inspiration? I come up with a lot of ideas about flights. I have trouble reading or watching movies without motion sickness and my brain starts to overdrive due to a false positive signal of being in danger. Unable to sleep or consume the media, all that remains is to take stock of my current position and consider the paths to follow.

What is the only technology without which you could not live and why? Not the sexiest technology, but my choice should be glasses. Life would be much less productive or enjoyable if I couldn’t read a book or screen more than a few inches away.

In the offices of Trupanion in Seattle. (Photo by David Jaw)

What does your workspace look like and why does it work for you? Our office in south Seattle hosts hundreds of dogs and cats at work every day. It is difficult to stay in a negative frame of mind when there is always a happy puppy or an animal-hungry kitten within walking distance.

Your best advice or tip for managing work and everyday life. (Help us, we need it.) I end up thinking about work all the time. I should be the one asking for advice here, not give it. Hah!

That said, I would be even worse if I did not make a considerable effort to lead a « balanced » life. My approach is to think about how time and energy are spent. I quantify the discretionary time and its distribution. I then evaluate the effect of the time spent in each category / effort with its first derivative. Using this model as a guide, I seek to align the time / energy allocation with my personal goals and values.

Mac, Windows or Linux? All! Windows for games, Mac for general purpose laptop. Linux for deploying ML models.

Kirk, Picard or Janeway? Can we extend it to any leader in a science fiction series? If so, I would choose Chrisjen Avasarala in “The Expanse”. Total badass. I love his willingness to sacrifice personal relationships for the sake of the greater good. “Earth must come first.”

Carrier, Time Machine or Invisibility Cloak? The invisibility cloak would be too sneaky for me. The time machine looks great, but I would be worried about accidentally causing something horrible, like the extinction of our species. I can’t think of a benefit that could balance this. The transporter wins through a disposal process. The downside is getting stuck or dying.

If someone gave me $ 1 million to start a startup, I … I would open a noodle shop. I love to make food and I would never get tired of iterating towards the perfect bowl.

I once stood in line for … Franklin Barbecue in Austin, Texas. Is it worth it.

Your models: My grandmother is the person I admire the most by a large margin. She went through incredibly difficult times, but never lost her temper. She knew she had to stay strong for those around her. Even though she didn’t have much herself, she went out of her way to help anyone who needed it. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve never seen her do anything selfish or immoral. It is a paragon of what we should all strive to be. It should also be noted that it is impossible to beat it in mahjong, unless it lets you win out of pity.

She was born and raised in the Chinese province of Sichuan. As the eldest daughter, it was her responsibility to take care of her younger siblings. As such, it did not have the luxury of a formal education. She left school at the age of 9 to help with the family farm and prepare meals. When the Communist Party came to power, she was in her early 20s with two baby girls. She correctly predicted that things would change dramatically if she stayed, so she uprooted her whole life and made the difficult journey to start over in Taiwan. Her sacrifice allowed her two daughters and her son to lead a happy and fulfilling life. She repeated this whole process when her children started having their own children. She again uprooted her life in Taiwan to move to Toronto where she helped raise all of her grandchildren. We all lead happy and fulfilling lives because of it.

She has been gone for nine years now, but she will always remain a strong motivation for my decision-making. “How can I be better to live in memory of my grandmother?” Is a question I often ask myself.

The biggest game in history Poker is my favorite game. Evidence-based decision making is rewarded and cognitive bias is punished.

Best gadget of all time: I wear a ring that measures sleep cycles. It should be helpful in composing an ideal sleep routine and improving overall health.

First computer: I convinced my parents to buy me a computer for homework in high school. I ended up playing « Starcraft » all day without remorse. I was a terrible son.

Current phone: Pixel 3.

Preferred application: Audible. Listening to audio books makes my long journey enjoyable.

Preferred cause:I love the concept of fairness and I support any cause that promotes it.

Most important technology of 2020: The proliferation of machine learning in recent years is due to open source tools (tensorflow, pandas, sklearn) and distributed computing as a service (AWS). Without these technologies, it would have been impossible for a small team like mine to do anything with impact.

Most important technology of 2022: The barrier to entry into AI usage is too high. It’s okay to know a lot of math or programming languages, but these hard-to-learn skills shouldn’t be a prerequisite for building good predictive models. Doctors, lawyers or any professional should be able to improve their decision making with machine learning. I hope our current position in AI is analogous to the early days of the adoption of personal computers, where users had to be familiar with command line execution. Once we reach the GUI operating system phase of analogy and the general population has access to these tools, we will start to see some really interesting applications.

Final advice for your fellow geekers: Approach your work with uncompromising integrity. Negative examples like dishonesty and acknowledgment of others’ work may seem beneficial in the short term, but I’m pretty sure it’s a trap. Humans are exceptional at passively detecting patterns; they will learn to avoid collaboration with bad actors even if they do not consciously know why. At best, the bad actor successfully removes the value from the system. More likely, the result will be a lower expected value for the actor and the system. Doing the right thing has the potential to inspire others to do the same, creating a positive feedback loop with unlimited benefits.

Garden. Install your insect hotels – Insurance for Pets

Insect hotel in the garden of Marie (Cher). (ISABELLE MORAND / RADIO FRANCE / FRANCE INFO)

Contaminated rivers or soils, abandoned industrial waste … Do you live near a polluted site?

Insect hotels stay in the garden year-round. But it will take a full year for the bricks, plant stems, pine cones, holed logs to be completely inhabited.

A hotel is capable of welcoming a host of very different insects, from solitary bees to butterflies, including ladybugs, syrphids, gendarmes and beets. But everyone needs their own room. This explains the diversity of materials used to build these hotels. Materials to recover for the most part in the garden, and in particular, hollow stems and solid stems which will not accommodate the same critters.

What is a hollow stem and what insect will spend the winter there or lay eggs? The answers of Bernard Cwiek who manufactures insect hotels in Belgium:

« The hollow stems are bamboo for example. But you can also use Japanese knotweed stems (Fallopia japonica) which is an invasive plant. These stems are favored nesting places for wild bees. The longer the stem, the more eggs there will be, one behind the other.

In a 10 cm hollow rod, there are 7 to 8 bees which come to lay their eggs. It also happens that, in a large diameter rod, a spider comes to settle to take advantage of a hotel and a restaurant … «

Bernard Cwiek, manufacturer of insect hotels in Belgium. (ISABELLE MORAND / RADIO FRANCE / FRANCE INFO)

Spiders are not crazy. By settling on insect hotels, they have no problem finding their food. Every year, dislodge them, because over time, the cobwebs thicken and form an impassable and dissuasive barrier for bees for example. Or for the syrphids which, themselves, lodge in full stems.

Bernard Cwiek’s explanations: « Solid stems are what are called marrow stems, like those of raspberries, butterfly trees, elderberries. These stems host the syrphid family, species of flies « disguised » as wasps. They can be easily recognized in adulthood, as they hover above plants. The syrphid is a small pollinator in the adult stage. Its larva eats aphids. And since he is not lazy, he digs his own hole in the rod. «

Insect hotel in the Amsterdam botanical garden. (ISABELLE MORAND / RADIO FRANCE / FRANCE INFO)

No matter the size of your insect hotel. It can be very small, and even installed in a planter. Anyway, even small, it will always be useful. Install it due east or south, or between these two points. It must be protected from prevailing winds and rains. Do not forget, whatever its size, to equip it with a waterproof roof. Slate, tile, wooden planks, anything is possible! The important thing is to keep it for a long time and that the insects feel well protected.

Thanks to Bernard Cwiek, craftsman, manufacturer of insect hotels (from mini to giant) in Ciplet, in Belgium. You can see his achievements on his website. His last idea: to combine art and insect hotel. These models called « Berluc » look like totems, and are perfect for smaller gardens.

Insurance for Pets

« From normal exchange comes crying » – Insurance for Pets

If we really want sustainability, we have to learn how to deal with differences in trade.

A few weeks ago, agricultural export figures came out. Approximately 94 billion euros and more than last year. That feels like a good report mark. But the minister was more careful than last year. « Yes, export is a wonderful achievement, but I think that agriculture is about other things than export, » she said. I don’t really know what we want anymore. Yes, of course, circular agriculture, but what kind of trade is it?

Trade agreements

The question is urgent because there is a lot going on as far as trade is concerned: There is the trade agreement with Canada (CETA), which has already been started provisionally, before the Court has given a definitive opinion on it. Furthermore, the European Council still has to decide on the Mercosur treaty. Negotiations are also ongoing with Australia, New Zealand and Philippines. It is possible that TTIP will be restarted, an EU trade agreement with the US.

The more openness, the better

From a merchant’s mentality, the more openness the better. A lot of companies are also in it, I think. But there is now a growing coalition of objectioners. I think they have a legitimate point. They argue that food products in countries such as the US and Canada are produced at significantly lower animal welfare, environmental, labor and food safety standards than in the EU. In the absence of import duties or the introduction of tariff-free import quotas, these products enter the European Union market at low prices. This leads to unfair competition and is « killing » for rigging circular agriculture.

I agree with the objectioners that it is consistent and fair to include these things from now on. That is difficult because it actually does not fit well into the framework that is now used for trade agreements. Countries will also oppose such « discrimination ».

Yes, of course, circular agriculture, but what kind of trade is it?

If we really want sustainability, we have to learn how to deal with differences in trade. They must then be mapped objectively and fairly. This applies in particular to animal products where the standards often differ. And then correctly apply the non-discrimination principle: we must not bring in what is not possible here! Otherwise it would be crying.

Food bank for animals opens new branches in Breda and Tilburg – Insurance for Pets

In Breda the animal food bank will soon be located in the hall of the former court on the Sluissingel. A suitable location is still being sought in Tilburg.

The food bank for animals is intended for people who can no longer care for their animals due to circumstances. « If you have a job, but you get sick or get fired, it is quite something to get rid of your pet. Nobody wants to make that choice. There are many clients who get isolated because they have nothing left and then their pet still the only support. It’s nice that those people have something to share their love with, to be able to tell a story. «

However, the animal food bank has the rule that customers are not allowed to take new pets.

Debt restructuring
Debora Sep is also a customer of the pet food bank in Etten-Leur. As ordered, she receives a bag of cat baking grid and cat food from Priscilla. « Unfortunately, I cannot afford this myself. We are at home in a debt counseling process and as a result it is now a lot less financially. » Removing the cats is not an option for her: « To be able to cuddle with the cats is something to look forward to. We have support for that. »

Priscilla de Veth started the pet food bank almost three years ago: « I heard that more and more people are struggling to care for their animals. I also have pets and know that they are a very important part of your family. » The relief organization is now temporarily in a former boarding school in Etten-Leur and is looking for an alternative location in Roosendaal.

Runs well
« It sounds really stupid to say so, but it is actually going very well here. We have a lot of clients, a lot of donations are made and we have a lot of volunteers. So we can run it well. It’s just a shame so many people need our help, of course, « says De Veth.

10.7 million animals for trials – Insurance for Pets

For the first time, a new EU report gives an overview of the animals used in Europe for research purposes. According to this, 10.7 million animals were used in animal experiments in the EU in 2017. In addition, 12.6 million animals were bred and killed for scientific purposes, but were not used in animal experiments. These include, for example, those that are necessary to maintain genetically modified animal strains.

The report for 2015 to 2017 is intended to supplement the annual animal experiment statistics. The EU Commission wants to use it to improve transparency. It includes Information about the authorities responsible for animal testing in the individual member states, education and training of people involved in animal testing, approval and rejection of projects requested, inspections of animal testing facilities and also data about « all other animals » that are not recorded in the annual statistics.

The EU report also includes the number of animals bred and killed but not used in animal experiments. For example, organs or tissues for cell lines or organoids were removed from some of these animals. Others served to create or maintain genetically modified animal strains.

« These are healthy zebrafish or mice, which are there to have offspring at the time when you need an animal experiment and live without pain or impairment, » explained the director of the Institute for Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) Austrian Academy of Sciences, Jürgen Knoblich, opposite the APA news agency.

Part of quality assurance

Such animals would also be needed in order to know their genetic and biological background, for example. This increases the scientific quality and reliability of the results. « You can avoid the worst of it, namely that you have to repeat an animal experiment, » says Knoblich.

Many experiments also require a certain number of animals of one sex or of a certain age. A large number of animals must be bred for this.

Numerous projects are underway in the EU and Switzerland with the aim of reducing animal testing and replacing it if possible. These efforts are summarized under the “3R principle”, in English: “reduce, refine, replace”.

In Switzerland, the number of animals used for animal testing is declining. According to the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), 586,643 animals were used in 2018, almost 28,000 fewer than in 2017. This corresponds to a decrease of 4.6 percent.

Industrialists ready to feed poultry and pigs with insects – Insurance for Pets

Posted Feb 7 2020 at 10:00 am

Faced with the global appetite for animal proteins, Europeans and
the French

are building a solid industry capable of responding to it: insect farming. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), insect production is expected to increase by 20% over the next five years.

The industrialists also advance their figures. In a study by Ipiff, the European organization of insect producers, published in December 2019, 5 million tonnes should be produced annually. This scenario is the most optimistic. “It will depend a lot on the evolution of the legislation. If nothing changes, production will not exceed 1.5 million tonnes « , nevertheless warns Antoine Hubert, president of Ipiff and co-founder of Ynsect, one of the world leaders in the sector.

Regulatory locks

The actors have their eyes riveted on Brussels. This is where things gradually changed in terms of regulations. Researchers and manufacturers have demonstrated the qualities, particularly in terms of health, of their products. For about five years, insect meal has been used in pet food, and has been authorized for two years in aquaculture. As a result, the sector took off, directly taking projects from the laboratory bench to industrial scale.

Seven species allowed

Small businesses for the time being are thriving with fundraising.

is currently investing more than 100 million euros, on the outskirts of Amiens, in the construction of a giant mealworm production unit. Not far from there, in Nesles, also in the Somme, its counterpart

finalizes the construction of a site, one of the largest in the world. Inaugurated in April, it will have required 50 million euros to industrialize a cutting-edge technology developed by the company, which employs around a hundred employees, including sixty engineers. Other units are also in the pipeline. This is the case for the start-up Agronutris, created in Saint-Orens-de-Gameville (Haute-Garonne), which decided to set up in Rethel, in the Ardennes, a protein production unit based on black soldier flies, one of the seven species authorized at the moment. In total, the amount of investments made in Europe – mainly in France, the sector leader – is already around 600 million euros.

2 billion investment

And things could still take off if the legislation evolves and allows the use of these insect proteins for other farms, especially in the poultry or pig sectors. Nearly 2 billion additional investment could then follow by the middle of this decade, according to forecasts from Ipiff, resulting in the creation of around 100,000 jobs. “With our partners, we are working on the marketing in the coming months of poultry fed with insect oil, a world first. The effect on the market will be identical to the explosion in demand in aquaculture ”, is delighted for its part Clément Ray, president of InnovaFeed.

Some have relied on human food, like Jimini’s or Insectéo, pioneers in the manufacture of aperitif cookies made from insects. These niches should, however, remain limited according to manufacturers, in particular because of the reluctance due to cultural habits. Unlike health foods, which are considered to be promising. Food supplements and other oils rich in omega 3, amino acids, magnesium or vitamin A could eventually invade the shelves of specialized stores and pharmacies.

Recent studies, carried out in particular by the companies Ynsect and Innovafeed, tend to demonstrate the anticholesterol and even anticancer properties of certain insect proteins. If the projects seem to be swarming, the manufacturers are still discreet on this point. In the insect world, silence is golden.

How to promote solidarity veterinary medicine? – Insurance for Pets

The animals accompanying the homeless are very often the targets of prejudice. They are said to be dirty, aggressive and they are thought to be beaten. However, very often, « the first concern of a homeless person is to feed their dog, before feeding themselves« , assures Christophe Buhot, veterinary doctor and administrator of the National union of veterinary surgeons of liberal exercise (SNVEL) during a round table on veterinary medicine for all during the National veterinary day on February 6, 2020. But how to bring care for these animals?

In this case, veterinarians are often alone

In France, 14.7% of the population is considered poor and the number of homeless has not decreased since 2017. There are 200,000 people without housing and « a third party owns a pet« , advises the deputy (LREM) and veterinarian Loïc Dombreval. Initiatives have been born in order to give veterinary care to the animals of the most underprivileged. But very often, they meet with too rigid legislation. For example, »the responsibility of the veterinarian can be a brake on solidarity medicine« notes Dr Buhot. How does insurance in the event of an incident with a dog work? The question can prove to be thorny. And practicing acts in the street does not amount to a legal care in a veterinary clinic.

A lot of veterinarians do solidarity acts, sometimes free. « Between 1% and 5% of their turnover comes from the needy« , remarks the administrator of SNVEL. Practitioners donate their fees, for example, and student dispensaries are set up like the one in Lyon. »veterinarians are alone« and get little help from the community in this area. (The offense of vagrancy no longer exists, « some mayors adopt decrees banning passive grouping of dogs to indirectly target the homeless » explains Loïc Dombreval, who points out that in such a context the help of the municipality seems unlikely).

And at the national level? A proposal, issued on National Veterinary Day, seemed to appeal to the assembly: « the state can also help us« notes a veterinarian in the audience. »Why not suspend VAT for veterinary medicine for all?« , he adds before being applauded by the assembly.

« Animals therefore become an emotional comfort for these people »

Homeless, the homeless person very often no longer has any link with society. « Animals therefore become an emotional comfort for these people, remarks Christine Laconde, director general of the Samu social de Paris. They are also vectors which allow a socialization because they are subjects of conversation« While they could become an engine of reintegration, the lack of infrastructure makes them a hindrance. It is difficult to have a place of accommodation in a center with a four-legged friend although it there are exceptions, notably in Lyon and Marseille with a continuous reception of these pairs.

Discarded from society, homeless people do not accept, for the most part, to be separated from their animal, even for a place of accommodation. It is therefore easy to understand that the health of their companion is essential for their own peace of mind. « When the veterinarian treats the pet, he also treats the owner a little« , emphasizes Loïc Dombreval. The well-being of these people depends on the health of their companion and therefore on the encouragement, legislative and local, of solidarity veterinary medicine.

the flamingo refuge threatened by deforestation – Insurance for Pets

When the sun rises, Lake Bogoria (Kenya) turns pink. It is one of the most beautiful postcards of Kenya. After the rainy season, the country hosts three quarters of the world’s flamingo and lesser flamingo populations. Each year, tens of thousands of tourists come from all over the planet to admire the spectacle.

« It’s really beautiful. I’ve never seen so many birds on a lake »exclaims a tourist. The flamingos began to desert some of the lakes where they used to live. For example, a hundred kilometers from Bogoria: Lake Nakuru, formerly known for its flamingos. « Ten years ago, you could see millions of flamingos, it looked like a big pink cloud. Today, you don’t see much anymore », deplores Jackson Raini, director of the flamingo protection network. In 2013, following floods, the level of this salt lake increased, its surface area doubled.

Share of Swedish organic market decreasing due to new trends – Insurance for Pets

The Swedish organic food market is losing shares, the Ekoweb market report shows. Although the turnover measured in the Swedish krona increased in 2019, this is due to the higher food prices, while the share of organic products is decreasing.

Olle Ryegård, analyst at Ekoweb: “Sales of organic food via the retail trade decreased in 2019. All major shareholders lose organic shares. Systembolaget (responsible for alcohol sales), Foodservice wholesalers and web stores see an increase in both sales and organic stocks. Nevertheless, the total Swedish organic food market is losing organic shares. «

Now that Ekoweb is presenting its market report on the organic food market in Sweden for the twelfth year in a row, it is clear that the increase in turnover of recent years has now stopped. This trend was already expected in 2016, Ekoweb writes in a press release, but is now visible throughout the retail trade.

Organic food sales have been estimated to have increased by one percent in the past year, equivalent to 400 million Swedish krona (€ 37.5 million) and 2 percent of the projected forecast for 2019. But food prices also rose over the same period by 3.5 percent, as a result of which the share declined organically from 9.3 to 9.0 percent.

Different focus
The declining biological share in the market can be explained by a changing focus in the retail trade. According to Ekoweb, the focus is shifting from organic to other trends and thus following the social debate. Trends such as health, sustainability, environment, climate and CO2 are still current. Vegetarian is emphasized in the report as an increasing trend in which many stores invested during the year.

Olle Ryegård: “It is clear that the sale of organic food has declined. They are no longer as hot and trendy as vegetarian products. A great added value, and a requirement, is the extremely high welfare of the animal, an added value that is of course completely unimportant for customers who purchase vegetarian food. But trends that increase convenience, such as the ready-made meals that are now extremely popular, also have a negative impact on organic products, because there are hardly any organic alternatives in that area. I am convinced that the organic market can still grow, but then the retail trade must want to change, especially how it is offered. Otherwise we have to accept a stagnated market. «

Fewer animal products
The segment within the organic products that decreases the most according to the report are Swedish animal products. Sales of Swedish organic dairy products decreased by around 5 percent during the year. But also organic minced meat, lamb, chicken meat and organic eggs are declining. According to Ekoweb, this may be because the general view is that organic is expensive and / or because the stores offer it less.

Increased online trade
Systembolaget increased its share in the organic market to 13.25 percent in 2019, making it the second largest shareholder. The public sector remains the largest with a share of around 38 percent. However, there is a trend that municipalities are saving on organic food, despite the national target that 60 percent of consumption should be organic by 2030. Furthermore, online sales continued to grow and even increased by around 20 percent last year. Organic sales for hotels and restaurants increased by around 8 percent.

Finally, the forecast for this year was presented. Ekoweb expects that the sales of organic foods with around 500 million Swedish krona (€ 47 million) will continue to increase in 2020. This corresponds to a value increase of 1 to 2 percent. It is also expected that sales will grow by almost 10 billion Swedish krona (€ 937 million) by 2029, which means a biological share of just under 13 percent.

Some figures from the Ekoweb market report

  • In the retail trade, supermarket chain ICA had the largest market share of organic food in 2019, followed by Systembolaget and Coop.
  • The value of organic sales rose to 28.2 billion Swedish krona (€ 2.6 billion) in 2019.
  • Denmark leads the way in terms of organic growth and exported 4 billion Swedish krona (€ 375 million) of organic products. Swedish exports amounted to 1.2 billion Swedish krona (€ 112 million).
  • There are 5700 organic farms in Sweden. In 2018, 20 percent of the total agricultural area was used for organic cultivation.

New contact point for animal lovers in Dortmund – Insurance for Pets

Food, toys, accessories and even beds: the new and second Dortmund branch of the « Das Futterhaus » group of companies offers over 12,000 articles for pets. The opening is on February 20 (Thursday) in the Indupark, Wulfshofstraße 1.

In addition to and the Danish bed warehouse, “Das Futterhaus” is the third specialty shop in the former electronics store Berlet. Another branch is located in the garden city.

Daniel Goldmann (28) will lead the approximately 600 square meter market as an independent entrepreneur and employ a team of four there.

Futterhaus offers « Unpacked Concept »

The company is proud of its “unpacked concept” of the feed bar: “Snacks for dogs as well as food and supplies for birds and small animals can be portioned at will and by hand,” said press spokeswoman Ricarda Gürne.

On the first three opening days, there are 20 percent coupons for customers, Daniel Goldmann reveals. With the « feed card » customer card, you can also save two percent on every purchase.

The company is not afraid of the close competition from the “Megazoo” branch on Borussiastraße: “The bird feeder is located in an attractive market environment and is conveniently located. The offer complements our second store in Dortmund very well, ”says Ricarda Gürne.

Broken, he tackles everything and goes on an adventure with his ferret – Insurance for Pets

In the space of a year, Charlie Hammerton lost his biological mother, his adoptive mother and his 22-year-old best friend. Tired of fighting his suicidal ideas, the Briton made a drastic decision: he left everything to go around the world. The young man now aged 25 did not embark on this adventure alone. He was indeed accompanied by Bandit, a ferret collected in a refuge in 2015.

After selling all of his goods, Charlie took off with his little companion in February 2018. And if we believe the testimony of the globetrotter, the presence at his side of the small animal saved his life. « First, he was just a pet. But when my mental health started to decline, the fact of having to take care of him prevented me from putting an end to my days several times ”, confides the Briton to Insider. Over the course of their adventures, the two friends have forged a very strong relationship.

« He was a real comrade »

Charlie and Bandit have notably visited France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the Middle East and the Arctic Circle. And the young man told their adventures on Facebook. “Bandit has been loved around the world! We often took him for a rat, which hurt him, but he quickly recovered, ”jokes Charlie. The Briton insists that Bandit never served him as a foil: « There was no way to inflate my ego. He was a real comrade, ”he says. Back from his journey, Charlie wrote a book called “Before Our Adventures”.

« I needed the world to see (…) the courage it takes to turn your back on what you know, what you have done, the person you believed be your whole life and become someone you want to be, ”says the Briton. Unfortunately, Bandit died a week after returning to the country. Today, Charlie is roaming UK schools to tell his story and talk about mental health issues. With his company Adventure Bandits, he also organizes camps to help young people in difficulty. As for the little ferret, it remains firmly anchored in Charlie’s heart: “He was my best friend. We were a team and it deserved to see the world as I wanted to see it. ”

VIDEO. In Germany, giant holograms for a circus show without any animal exploitation – Insurance for Pets

The German circus Roncalli has managed to create an animal show without real animals thanks to holograms: horses, elephants, fish … The public appreciates this abandonment of the exploitation of animals while retaining their magic: « I thought it was good. We don’t need animals. It’s not great for them to be in a circus », says a child full of wonder.

A spectator is also delighted with her evening: « I really liked it. What a great idea. The 3D show was great. We don’t need anything else. It is no longer worth hurting real animals. » How many animals have there been in fact demeaned, chained, degraded … in the very long history of circus shows staging beasts?

500,000 euros invested to no longer make animals suffer

Bernhard Paul founded this innovative circus in 1976. He claims today to have always refused this mistreatment, even if he presented numbers with wild animals for many years: « Forty-three years ago, nobody would have gone to the circus without numbers with animals. People asked if they could see them. If we said no, they didn’t come in. It was another time. »

An animal protection association complained one day about a number with a goldfish in a bowl: « There, I thought it was over. » Years later, the fish remained, but in the form of a hologram. Technology has brought the solution for 500,000 euros. « The technical challenge mainly arose because the scene is round », specifies the head of the digital department. Or two years of work to admire animals without making one suffer.

Horror practices in ‘organic’ slaughterhouse: ‘better living’ pigs heavily mistreated – Insurance for Pets

Animal welfare organization Ongehoord has released shocking images, showing that pigs are being seriously abused in one of the largest Dutch slaughterhouses. Upon arrival, animals are brutally beaten out of trucks, sick animals are hunted and crippled animals are pulled by their tails.

The forbidden practices were brought to light by a group of volunteers who made undercover images in the pig slaughterhouse. The research editorial staff of RTL Nieuws has the images in their hands and has gone through more than 100 hours of footage.

The undercover images were made in the Westfort company in IJsselstein, where organic pigs and pigs with a Beter Leven Keurmerk are slaughtered. Around ten thousand pigs are slaughtered there every day.
Slachthuis Westfort wants to be the most modern meat company in the world and, in its own words, is committed to animal welfare. « We believe that people should get a fair picture of how animals are kept, transported and slaughtered, » one of the volunteers of Ongehoord told RTL.

According to RTL News, it touches once or more every day. During the beating, a kind of paddle is used, which is intended as a rattle to get the animals moving. Pigs in the corner are also beaten hard by stable staff and drivers.

The instructions of the NVWA supervisor state that when unloading the animals, stress must be limited as much as possible. Also that animals must be given the time and space to walk in the right direction themselves, and they must not be dragged out of the trucks. It is therefore remarkable that the NVWA really does nothing against malpractice and is even accessory. The images show that NVWA veterinarians also participate in the abuse. Westfort told RTL News that in the second half of 2019 the company did not receive any official warning or fine from the pig abuse supervisor.

Westfort says to be shocked by the images and takes immediate action. ”Let no misunderstanding exist: we do everything that is necessary to prevent a recurrence. This is in line with the reputation of our company that is seen as a leader in animal welfare, « the slaughterhouse said in a response to RTL News.

The company says that existing permanent camera surveillance has now been intensified. A team with, among others, two of their own veterinarians is now structurally monitoring the images. An investigation has been initiated and the rules in the stable have been tightened. In addition, the slaughterhouse announces that the rattle is no longer used.

Minister of Agriculture Schouten is also very shocked by the images and will intervene at the Dutch slaughterhouses. The high production speed would prevent the NVWA from properly monitoring the welfare of the animals. That the emphasis is now too much on saving costs is at the expense of animal welfare. The minister will also ask the NVWA for clarification about why the regulator does not intervene and even participates in animal abuse.

The minister wants to further introduce camera surveillance in slaughterhouses, but wants to dampen expectations. Because despite the fact that Westfort was fully equipped with CCTV, these horror practices were able to take place.

Animal rights organization Varkens in Nood also announced earlier this month that pigs are being cooked alive. This emerged from reports that Varkens in Nood received from the NVWA. The documents, which cover the period from January 2018 to July 2019, show that in some cases it was poorly checked whether the animals were unconscious, with the result that pigs drowned screaming and violently in glowing hot water. NVWA inspectors witnessed this six times in a year and a half.

Dried snakes are used to treat arthritis in traditional Chinese medicine

Scientists suspect that a seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan is the likely cause of the coronavirus epidemic, which has claimed 170 lives so far. The market was known for the illegal trade in wild animals such as snakes, raccoons and porcupines, kept in cages to be sold either as food or medicine, until the entire province was brought into use. quarantine.

China is the world’s largest consumer of wildlife products, whether legal or illegal.

Wildlife trade in China accused of pushing several bird species to the brink of extinction

China has traditionally had a huge appetite for wildlife products. Some animals are consumed for their taste, as a delicacy, while others are consumed as traditional medicine.

Restaurants in many parts of China are known to serve dishes like bat soup (with the whole bat inside), soup made with tiger testicles, or civet body parts palm tree.

Fried cobra, braised bear paw, tiger bone wine are also on the menu at high-end restaurants.

The slum wildlife markets are home to rats, cats, snakes and many bird species, including critically endangered species.

China is building a hospital to handle suspected and confirmed coronavirus cases.

The notion of « yewei » (literally « wild tastes » in Chinese) is a terminology common throughout China that culturally conveys a mixture of adventure, daring, curiosity and privilege, « said an investigator of a a large international agency that has conducted several wildlife trade investigations in China.

Products from wildlife are also used in many traditional Chinese medicines, mainly because they are believed to have healing powers to treat various conditions, such as male impotence, arthritis and gout.

The demand for pangolin scales for such drugs has almost wiped out the animal in China and the pangolin has now become the most poached wildlife in other parts of the world as well.

The unsustainable use of rhino horn for traditional Chinese medicine is another example of how this practice has made the animal an endangered species.

All this happens when it is estimated that more than 70% of emerging infections in humans originate from animals, especially wild animals.

The previous SARS outbreak appeared to come from civet cats sold in a Chinese wildlife market.

The epidemic has brought to light the wildlife trade in China, which has already been criticized by conservation groups for pushing a number of species to the brink of extinction.

Following this latest epidemic, Chinese authorities have temporarily banned the trade in wildlife to help prevent the spread of the virus.

But environmentalists take this opportunity to demand a permanent ban.

  • WHO calls Coronavirus threat high

Will China listen?

Could this virus epidemic be a turning point in the global effort to end the illegal wildlife trade and then protect public health?

Experts say it’s a daunting challenge, but the mission may not be impossible.

The viruses causing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) are also believed to originate from bats, but are believed to have entered humans via civets and camels. , respectively, according to WHO officials.

« We are in contact with wild species and their habitats that we did not know before, » said Dr Ben Embarek, Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, World Health Organization (WHO), to the BBC. ).

« So we have a number of new diseases linked to new contact between humans and previously unknown viruses, bacteria and parasites. »

Wildlife products as meat and also as traditional Chinese medicines are huge industry in China

A recent analysis of some 32,000 known terrestrial vertebrate species has shown that around 20% of them are bought and sold on the world market, legally or illegally.

This represents more than 5,500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

The illegal wildlife trade is estimated at around $ 20 billion and is the fourth largest illegal trade after drugs, people smuggling and counterfeiting.

Chinese demands would also fuel wildlife markets in China’s neighboring countries

« This is an opportunity to put an end to the possession, breeding, domestication and use of wild animals, not only for meat but also for traditional medicine, » said Debbie Banks, from the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency, which has conducted major wildlife surveys in China.

Brexit. What will really change from Saturday? – Insurance for Pets

At midnight French time on January 31, the United Kingdom officially left the European Union. But the effects of Brexit (for ? British exit) will, in reality, be barely visible the next morning. It will take until December 31, 2020, the end of the transition period provided for in the agreement between London and Brussels, to really cut the bridges. Unless there is a further extension, possible until the end of 2022, if both parties agree.

This reprieve should allow the British and Europeans to renegotiate one to one some 600 international agreements (trade, traffic, justice, defense, etc.).

For expatriates?

In this 1st In February, the 3.2 million EU nationals living in the United Kingdom and the 1.2 million British in Europe are obviously not asked to leave. They still retain all their rights (work, pensions, social security, etc.), at least until December 31, 2020.

Europeans expatriated across the Channel must, however, if they have not already done so, take steps to obtain a « settled status » (residence). So far, the European Parliament has worried, most have only obtained temporary and not permanent residence status.

For travelers?

Since the United Kingdom is not a member of the Schengen area, a passport or identity card is already required to get there. Nothing new, therefore, at first. Ditto for the European health insurance card, necessary in the event of hospitalization in the United Kingdom: it remains valid for the time being. And after that ? Everything will depend on the negotiations to come.

Note however a concrete change for the British: they will be able to benefit from this 1st February, a national passport, blue in color, which will no longer bear the words « European Union ».

The British will benefit from a national passport, in blue color, on which will no longer appear the mention « European Union ». | REUTERS

For pets?

Over 300,000 European cats, dogs, ferrets and other pets travel to the UK each year for vacation or to live there. And about 250,000 farts British do the opposite. Their conditions of entry or exit from the country will not vary, until December 31, 2020. Just barely will they, as before, be microchipped and up to date with their vaccinations. For the rest, everything is possible: new vaccines (rabies, etc.), quarantine at the border, etc. These arrangements will also be at the heart of the upcoming negotiations between London and Brussels.

For “duty free”?

The United Kingdom remains in the customs union until the end of the transitional period. So there is no question, for the moment, of re-establishing duty free: if product taxes are settled in the country of purchase, the EU does not impose any restrictions on the quantity of alcohol or tobacco. Customs will continue to ask, beyond 800 cigarettes and 10 liters of spirits acquired in the United Kingdom, if these products are intended for personal consumption, recalls the European Consumer Center.

For the driving license?

The European driving license will remain valid in the United Kingdom for the next few years, confirmed the British government. After the transitional period, on the other hand, the British could be forced to acquire an international permit to circulate in the EU, unless otherwise agreed.

For Erasmus +?

The student exchange program is maintained for the time being: Europeans who are already studying or doing an internship in the United Kingdom and British people in a Member State will be able to complete their studies under the same conditions, continuing to receive their scholarships. What happens next will also depend on the negotiations to come.

In 2016, in front of the University of Newcastle in the north-east of England, students hostile to Brexit were distributing leaflets to convince students to vote against Brexit. Their fear: the impact of the withdrawal on Erasmus programs. | David Ademas Archive, WEST FRANCE

For customs tariffs?

Nothing changes until December 31. Beyond that, Northern Ireland, the only British province to have a common land border with an EU country (the Republic of Ireland), will enjoy a special status. Goods produced in Northern Ireland will continue to flow to the EU without control. Those imported into Northern Ireland from Great Britain or a third country (non-European), and intended for the European market, will however be subject to customs controls in the ports or airports of Northern Ireland where they will arrive.

For fishermen?

The question of access to British territorial waters for European fishermen is already shaping up to be one of the main areas of tension to be feared in the upcoming negotiations between London and Brussels. But fishermen can continue as before, at least until December 31, 2020.

For the British in our cities?

757 Britons are elected to French municipal councils: it is the most represented nationality among the 2,500 non-French elected representatives of European origin. During the March 2020 elections, they will no longer be allowed to run on the lists, unless they have taken care to change their nationality, to acquire that of France … or another Member State. Same scenario for voters: the British will no longer have the right to vote in France.

For the British in Brussels?

They pack up. From this 1st February, the British no longer have the right to sit in European institutions, nor to take part in debates and votes. Their country, on the other hand, will continue, until the end of the transition period, to pay its contribution to the European budget, and will remain subject to all European rules and legislation.

The departure of the 73 British MEPs from the European Parliament leaves a big void. The number of elected officials rose from 751 to 705. Twenty-seven seats were also redistributed to demographically under-represented Member States. France recovers five…

For English in Brussels?

Among the 24 official languages recognized by the European Union, according to the treaties (art. 352 of the TFEU and art. 55 of the TEU), English remains the most widely used within the institutions. According to European treaties, each new member state is free to indicate « its » language at the very moment of its accession. In theory, Brexit requires, English – chosen by the United Kingdom alone – could therefore disappear. But that would require a unanimous vote of the 27 states. It seems unlikely that Ireland and Malta – which had promoted Gaelic and Maltese when they joined – would give up English, the common language of their countries.

You couldn’t miss it. Stop sending mittens to Australia! – Insurance for Pets

A koala injured in fires with mittens at the end of its legs. (AFP)

Australia no longer wants mittens for its Koalas. You know that the country has been ravaged by monster fires, that millions of hectares have gone up in smoke, that millions of animals have perished or been seriously injured …
Among them, the koalas. We have all seen these images of koalas, with burned legs.

The animal rescue collective craft guide has therefore launched an appeal: help us we need blankets, pockets and mittens for our injured koalas.
The idea is to put the cream on the legs of the koala and put the mittens on it so that it cannot touch it. Result, the appeal was heard.

And there is the beautiful story. In Canada, for example, a Facebook group employs almost 15,000 people to knit mittens. In France, in England too everyone started knitting. In short: generosity, mobilization, we love the world when it is like that. Except that our knitters may have invested a little too much in their mission.

Enough is enough ! We can no longer receive mittens, it’s super nice but we no longer know where to put them. The heads of associations, the volunteers when they see the mittens coming, they no longer want to say that it’s cute. They are at the end of the line.

The problem is that with this deluge of good intentions, there is no longer room to store everything. Some volunteers had to rent boxes at their own expense to put the mittens. An association did not go there by four paths and published this message: « Thank you for your support, your solidarity, your kind words and thoughts, and the items made so far. Please do not send items to Australia again. »

And don’t try to fall back on blankets or kangaroo pockets because it’s the same. Sometimes too many good intentions kill good intentions.

The unreasonable human being and the unreasonable animal – Insurance for Pets

How many animals were killed, killed or killed in the last day, last month or last year? Worldwide at least 150 billion ‘consumption’ animals on an annual basis, 1.8 million animals per day in Dutch slaughterhouses and more than 1 billion animals in recent forest fires in Australia.

Most people don’t even dizzy anymore. To be honest, it makes little sense to call them. After all, the animal remains the object of our thinking, man is the center of existence. Political and social discussions rarely or never concern fundamental questions in the human-animal relationship. What can humans use the other animal for, what does it mean that animals have self-esteem, does the animal have rights and what interests must we weigh against each other?

Cc photo: Michael Strobel

In 2020 people are still unreasonable, activists are desperate and animals are unreasonable. The debate about the intrinsic value of the animal, the integrity and rights of animals can finally be held. If not, let’s be honest and definitively record that animals are simply goods forever and ever. The uncivilized occupation of the earth by humans is then the realistic reality in which slavery, exploitation and destruction of animals is the prevailing standard.

However, it is good not only to remove stone historical statues from their pedestal, but to raise living man from the height and to descend within the nature of which he is and remains a part.

Farewell to anthropocentrism
We still live in the collective delusion that actions towards animals have no moral consequences. (Western) society has not come much further than criminalizing individual animal abuse and establishing what welfare rules are. Institutional, cultural, religious and scientific atrocities against animals are commonplace. You could even call it a universal cultural heritage. Slaughterhouses are the largest places where blood flows from young animals, those who love bullfighting go to Spain, to see a cock on a pole for three days there is an island to be found, we allow the knife to be cut into a prayer without anesthesia and testing white bunnies to see if batteries are toxic is no moral problem. The dull person who is alienated from living nature and only moves within the walls of a created cruel cultural world where human interests are concerned.

Where nature comes into the picture, it is there for humans. Debates about whether or not to eat meat are mainly related to the climate crisis. Even with regard to climate, environmental and nature issues, there is the pitfall of the anthropocentric paradigm. Let us tackle the crises for us, humanity, to give the children a future. The non-human animals are additional damage. The farewell to anthropocentrism is too painful for modern people. God has been declared dead in the West, alive and kicking out there, rational science has been embraced, but animals still act in our minds based on their instincts. People have freed themselves from their gods, started to behave like a new god with dominion over all the biological results of evolution. Man is seen by man himself as a supernatural creative force with « reason » and « free will. »

What do we not want to know and why not?

Animals are not machines and people are not gods – perhaps with the exception of Pele, Maradona, Cruijff and Messi – because it is certain that many other « higher » animals have an urge to explore and are eager to learn in a way that goes far beyond their instinct. The animal is a feeling, knowing and willing creature. Your human is less unique than you think. Animals other than you feel pain, experience stress and anxiety. An animal has knowledge about its environment and acts to investigate and find. The animal also has an intrinsic value.

This means that animals, irrespective of their usefulness for humans, have an self-esteem that is not automatically subordinate to human interests. This legal recognition means that the interest of the animal must be made transparent and must be weighed against other relevant interests.

Even if animals do not suffer, the question is whether everything is allowed by what humans want. It is about respect and integrity. Integrity means that the wholeness and integrity of an animal must be respected. Respect the uniqueness of the animal to prevent it from being a parts factory for the purposes of humans. And not to mention the species-specific behavior of the animal: being able to move, play, reproduce, investigate and so on. Everything animals cannot or hardly do in intensive livestock farming. It is about more than just the meat. About the entire relationship between humans and other animals.

Can it be about more than one ounce of meat?
In this first 20 years of the new century, the terms intrinsic value, integrity, species-specific behavior have shifted to the distant background and have been forgotten. Not to mention the echo of animal rights, what is that again? Health and well-being are sometimes discussed, but it is mainly about saving the planet so that people can go to amusement and nature parks in a reasonable climate in 2050 and afterwards probably eat cultured meat, 3D-printed meat or vegetable meat substitutes with the taste and bite of meat.

The debate about the self-esteem of animals, their integrity, the rights of animals and the trade-offs between interests must be conducted. Back in the west and of course the earth keeps on saving and fighting the climate crises is important, but don’t do it only for your own species. What do we miss within the social movement?

In the Netherlands there are a number of excellent animal interest organizations. Encourage animal protection and Wakker Dier that encourage people to consume more consciously. Yes, we know, animal-friendly meat does not exist, but you also do not believe in mirror fairy tales that everyone will become vegan? Only calling « Go Vegan » does not save the planet and few animals. There are many organizations that enter the field of animal suffering in many ways to bring about a change. Because there are many types of consumers and therefore many strategies are also desperately needed.

But the social movement is missing something. There is a political branch, the PvdD, but something is needed outside of it. An (inter) national organization that puts animal rights on the agenda and achieves more successes. A well-known man or woman who, with the help of many, in a professional structure and open culture, loosens the discussion from the anthropocentric old classical view. I don’t care much who jumps in the gap within the social movement. Although I hear a song in my head: Go, Go, Marianne, lead us, deliver the animals, now from the tyrants and set us free! And make us free! Perhaps a new non-parliamentary association or foundation, with an already familiar face, achieves much more than fairly repetitive discussions with positions taken within a political system.

Man, God, Darwin and Animal. In 2020 people can start again with the downing of stuck human placards that we will be ashamed of 100 years later. Life is worth everything and life is about the quality of life for people and for all other animals.

Let’s tear away a tear from all animal suffering and then decide that we will do it differently, better and above all more morally. The animal is entitled to it. It is about more than one ounce of meat or a slice of vega sausage.

Plans for an animal crematorium in Schermbeck – skepticism remains – Insurance for Pets

The majority of the committee members opted for restrictions that initially make construction at the Hufenkampweg site less likely.

After a long discussion, the planning and environmental committee of the municipality of Schermbeck decided by a majority – with Michael Fastring (SPD) and Dr. Stefan Steinkühler and Jürgen Trick (both Greens) – another « hurdle » for the construction of the planned animal crematorium in the Hufenkampweg industrial area.

Specifically: The administration is commissioned to allow the settlement of businesses and systems within the normal possible distance classes after the distance decree for NRW in the further process of drawing up development plan No. 52. However, with numerous restrictions, according to which only administrative and manufacturing types of business, such as service companies, and manufacturing are permitted.

Exclude certain operating rates

In addition, modes of operation without these features, such as retail businesses, facilities for church, cultural, social and health purposes, amusement facilities, facilities for sporting purposes, warehouses, storage spaces, crematoriums and the like could be excluded.

However, the municipality of Schermbeck is also aware that there could be a standard control procedure, the outcome of which is uncertain.

The Wesel company Cremare has now submitted the building application for the construction of an animal crematorium, the Wesel district is currently examining the admissibility.

District Wesel has to decide

Background: The approval of crematoriums, e.g. for pets and horses in the course of possible application or company-specific approval procedures under the immission control law and the public participation to be carried out reserved for the district of Wesel as the responsible licensing authority.

According to the administration, certain residual risks remain

Furthermore, the administration had explained in advance: By the second partial decision of the Planning and Environment Committee in the meeting on October 1, 2019, the administration was commissioned to determine whether an exclusion of animal crematoria should be carried out with a view to the possible exclusion of crematoriums in the “Hufenkamp” industrial area is justifiable in terms of urban planning.

A specific exclusion of this type of plant / mode of operation alone is not possible in a legally secure form according to the present statements if, by the way, the system / operating modes that are permitted according to the distance classes in the NRW Distance Decree are approved almost without restriction.

A legally compliant planning free of errors presupposes that the municipality, if it restricts the area types defined by the legislator or legislator, also has valid, understandable urban planning reasons for this.

In the event of a judicial review, however, certain legal risks remain.

The hamster, a pet rodent – Insurance for Pets

>> In the paradise of pets
>> The pet trade is on the rise

A hamster is both fun and interesting to observe.

Photo: Phuong Nga / CVN

Very pretty, interesting to observe, inexpensive to buy and maintain. These are the characteristics that make a hamster an ideal pet. This rodent is robust with a tail a little shorter than the length of its body. He has a cute face, small noses and ears, short legs and wide feet. Its thick fur can be black, gray, white, buff, brown, yellow or even reddish. The lower parts of his body are white with shades of gray and black.

Raising a hamster at home

« The hamster is smaller than the dog, cleaner than the cat and much more alert than the fish. It is ideal for apartment living », considers Nguyên Xuân Long, 13, who lives in the Câu Giây district of Hanoi, after having raised several domestic animals. « I have two hamsters that I bought three weeks ago. They are an inexhaustible source of entertainment for those who like to observe them », he believes.

Once a week, he accompanies them by the lake located in the urban city of An Binh in Câu Giây to share experiences and present his nice critters to his friends.

The hamster is very sensitive to noise, such as shouts for example, and prefers to be looked at rather than touched.

Carrying his hamster in his hands, Trân Van Son, a pupil of the Mai Dich college, confides that this little rodent has requirements in terms of place of life and master. « It is better not to leave him in an almost empty cage. He needs to move, explore, play and gnaw »he says. And to continue: « A hamster is a lot of joy, but also work. As a caretaker, it is your responsibility. It is entirely up to you ».

Some websites (,, offer many kinds of hamsters such as: Campell hamster, Russian hamster and Roborovski hamster. The price ranges from 50,000 to 300,000 dong depending on the age, beauty and rarity of the hamster. The Russian and Campell hamsters are the most affordable – count around 50,000 dong.

Like many parents, Nguyên Thi Ngoc Hanh, 42, gave in to the pleas of his child who wanted a pet. « My son is passionate about pet rodents and dreamed of having a hamster. For his 12th birthday, we gave him one with his cage. He was overjoyed for a week », she remembers.

According to her, this little rodent can bring a lot to children, who learn to take responsibility by looking after a living creature, to treat it with respect. In addition, its hairs very rarely cause allergies.

The hamster is ideal for apartment living.

« Two of the drawbacks are its short lifespan, around three years, and its incompatibility with young children, who rarely know how to handle them safely », says Ngoc Hanh. The hamster does not like to be cuddled and petted. It is very sensitive to noises, such as shouts for example, and prefers to be watched more than touched.

The hamster feeds mainly on seeds. But he also likes vegetables, fruits or tubers, especially carrots. These allow him to have his teeth, which grow throughout his life.

Evaluating your health is one of the important elements in choosing a hamster. A healthy animal has a clean, supplied coat with no dandruff, crusts or peeled areas. His eyes are wide open and clear, and the coat around them perfectly dry and without the slightest crust or secretion. His nose should be clean, with no trace of discharge.

What will happen to French people traveling to the UK after January 31? – Insurance for Pets

The United Kingdom is getting there. Midnight Friday, the British will say bye Bye in the European Union, more than three years after the 2016 Brexit referendum. An upheaval that plunges many EU citizens into the dark.

But there’s no need to panic immediately. If you have planned a trip across the Channel this year, no additional steps will be necessary. Indeed, the withdrawal agreement concluded between London and Brussels provides for a transition period which runs until December 31, 2020.

No changes until December 31

During this period, « all rights » of the Union with regard to free movement « will be maintained […] as if the United Kingdom is still a member of the European Union, « says the European Commission. In other words, a valid identity card or passport will suffice to travel there as part of a trip. will be required.

Likewise, UK law will provide the same rights as those provided by the EU in the event of denied boarding, cancellation or long delay of flights, trains, buses or boats. European carriers will therefore continue to be subject to Union law for travel to and from the EU.

No more changes to plan for school trips. Only an identity card or passport and authorization to leave the country for minors will be requested during the transition period. Travel conditions with a pet will again be the same as at present, while the French driving license will still allow you to travel across the Channel.

The extended transition period?

Finally, the European Health Insurance Card (CEAM) or, failing that, the Provisional Replacement Certificate will remain valid during the transition period and will allow access and treatment of the necessary medical care during the stay . A French tourist can therefore be treated on the same conditions as an insured person from the British social security scheme, at the financial cost of his health cover.

The transition period will help establish the future trade relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union. Negotiations are expected to start sometime in February. But many doubt the possibility of reaching an agreement in just eleven months. This is why an extension of the transition period until December 31, 2021 or even 2022 cannot be excluded.

Once it is completed, the British government website states that the identity card for citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) will no longer be accepted for travel to the United Kingdom. The presentation of a passport will therefore be compulsory. However, a visa should not be required for stays of less than three months.

VIDEO. Why were a million seabirds found dead? – Insurance for Pets

Contaminated rivers or soils, abandoned industrial waste … Do you live near a polluted site?

A million seabirds killed by a heat wave. It is the sad result of a scientific study and the resolution of a mystery dating back several years. Between the summer of 2015 and the spring of 2016, 62,000 guillemots of starving Troïl were found on beaches. However, this was only a tiny fraction of the total number of victims. Almost four years after the fact, scientists estimate the total number of dead birds at nearly one million and give details of the causes.

A sea heat wave which appeared in 2013 in the northeast of the Pacific Ocean is responsible for this massacre. And in 2015, it intensified causing a warming of three degrees over an area of 1600 square kilometers and thus disrupting ecosystems.

Algae important for the food chain then became rare and others, more harmful, multiplied on the contrary. Predators such as salmon, halibut and cod have seen their metabolism change, pushing them to eat more and therefore competing with fish-eating birds. Finally, the production of phytoplankton has also greatly decreased.

Most new star restaurants score poorly on animal welfare – Insurance for Pets

The eight Dutch restaurants that received a Michelin star for the first time earlier this month are generally not concerned about animal welfare. This is apparent from an analysis of the Animal Welfare Check.

Six of the eight restaurants score insufficient. Only Eden from Valkenswaard and Amsterdam’s Graphite take enough account of animal welfare when compiling their menus to get enough, says Animal Welfare Check.

It is striking that they offer relatively more vegetarian and vegan dishes and do not have duck liver and veal on the menu. Eden only uses pork from the Varkenshoederij in Mechelen, one of the five-star pig farmers from Varkens in Nood.

The fact that the other new star restaurants are doing so badly has everything to do with Michelin’s selection criteria. « Michelin primarily rewards restaurants with a classic, animal-protein-based cuisine, » writes organization. For example, the restaurants serve their guests with foie gras and veal.

Foie gras comes from ducks and geese that are force-fed with a tube in the throat. This causes a lot of stress, anxiety and injuries. Foie gras therefore scores 2 on animal welfare. (…) Veal without certification even scores 1 on animal welfare. The calves are taken from the mother immediately after birth, never go outside and often have anemia due to insufficient roughage.

Are guide dogs for the blind exploited like any other? – Insurance for Pets

Paris, Saturday January 25, 2019 – Many comments
are currently interested in some form of  »
radicalization « Which would manifest itself in the expression of
different ideas. Many spheres would be concerned and the
feeling of acting for a  » just cause  » could
favor acting out, censorship and taking of
speech, yet considered in other circumstances as
dangerous and in any case going beyond the legitimate framework of
challenge and defense from his point of view. The actions of
certain animal rights groups, notably directed against
butcheries, thus aroused strong disapproval, even
in those who are very sensitive to animal suffering. The
violence and the stigma of a category of people have been
effect deemed perfectly inappropriate and by no means
legitimized by the urgency of the subject.

How dare you ?

However, the denunciation of this radicalization,
necessarily worrying, because ignoring the principles
essentials of a reasoned debate, can sometimes lead to some
deformations. Thus, some French media have recently
moved by an anecdote reported by the Daily Mail. The latter has
painted a portrait of 30-year-old blind Jonathan Attenborough
for five years, and assisted daily by Sam, a guide dog
blind. The young man reported how twice these
past few weeks he had been publicly criticized for
the use of an animal; a first time in courteous terms,
a second time more virulently. However none
physical violence was perpetrated and he was never threatened with
losing your dog, contrary to what was supposed
some presentations of this story in the press

Beyond shortcuts and sterile arrests

The shortcuts that we have read confirm how the
radicalization of certain speeches prohibits listening. In front of
the excess of certain methods, it is impossible to hear the
message transmitted and appreciate the quality of the arguments. However,
the issue of using animals to support people
with disabilities is the subject of further reflection by
some animal advocates who go far beyond
the humiliating and easily destabilizing side of a
handicapped person (at least loose method and

Many blogs discuss this subject and invite a perception
different. Thus, the Antispecies Notebooks offer to discover
the reflections of Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka, authors of
Zoopolis – A Political Theory of Animal Rights (2011). It’s about
first of all, unlike the classic associations of
defense of animals, not to consider dogs helping
blind and disabled people like  » victims
« .  » We should feel sorry for these animals (…). Those are
the victims. They are like children
»Note the
authors who compare this perception to that of people who
use these animals and often adopt an attitude  »
full of pity, paternalism and anthropocentrism
« . However, for Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka, another point of view
can be adopted by considering these animals that work for
man like  » workers « . However, they note:  »
There is no labor code regulating the conditions
of work, health or well-being of these employees. Certainly these
dogs are working but they are not considered to be
workers (…). Service dogs should have
rights because they deserved them. They should benefit from
regular weekly holidays. They should benefit from
annual vacation. They should have a minimum wage. This
money, held by a neutral third party, would finance their time
rest. Free days spent with other dogs playing,
run, jump, swim, make friends. Without any obligation or
task, no work. Their salary could finance pensions
of disability in the event of an industrial accident. He would be employed at the
creation of retirement centers which they could themselves
profit once their mission is completed
« .

Dressage review

If we can smile at the description of such a social code of
working dog (and one might wonder if unions
could be considered as well as a right to strike), we measure
how much the radicalization of speeches and deeds masks the
content of certain reflections that invite us to question us on
our relationship to the animal. Similarly, the author of the blog Une
earthly suggests not to settle for the feeling of
praised the animal, which would be well treated or happy to
to work.  » Support animal exploitation on the pretext
that animals ‘like to work’ that it’s a ‘exchange of good
compromise ’,‘ the harmony between two hopefuls who help each other
mutually like other species do in the wild,
that they are « well treated » is to forget all that
»And in particular with regard to the guide dogs
dressage that would not be  » confuse with education
« . Dressage explains the author would be a deviation of some
natural abilities of the animal. Now, according to this activist
anti-specialist  » the dog and other animals get nothing
of dressage, this is just enslavement on the part of
the animal for the benefit of humans
« . However, she
stresses the need not to vilify the blind and the
people with disabilities who use animals to help them.  »
I do not criticize blind people who use
guide dogs, I’m just trying to suggest alternatives for
that they can be independent and autonomous without exploiting the
animals. Why can’t our society contemplate the
creating jobs to help the blind, but perhaps with a
another approach in their training. Encourage the help of
technology, creating new jobs (…). And why not
adopt a dog or volunteer at a shelter, but
without asking the animal for anything
« . With those
questions, we measure the difference that exists in the link of
trust between two humans and a human and an animal. Both
links are probably not superimposable. The dependence that
would create between a man and his human assistant would indeed
very different and less emotional. In the relationship with the animal,
the quality of support is also linked to the fact that
a person with a disability feels that they are giving almost as much (and not
money!) to the animal by loving it, welcoming it home and
by giving him certain care that he receives benefits from him.
No doubt, such a balance would be very difficult to find in the
case of a human-to-human relationship. Generally, we measure
how difficult it is to adapt our conventional filters
of interpretation of human relationships to an animal / human relationship
and this is what sometimes makes the confrontation with
antispecies who sometimes adopt logics which present
certain limits or face rhetorical dead ends.

More prosaically, if it is not excluded that the animal can
derive a significant emotional benefit from this relationship with humans
(it is true impossible to measure and whose evaluation is
necessarily biased) which exceeds a simple ratio
professional, for animal activists, dogs
guide for the blind are covered today (no more regulatory framework
protector of social rights « Dogs) of a
exploitation. Thus, Sue Donaldson and Will Kymilicka judge  »
Somewhere between the donkey whose presence among the
sheep keep predators at bay, and the guide dog
blind man who, after being subjected to months of training
intensive, spends most of his life serving as an instrument for
service of a third party, we cross the line between
the use of the holding
« .

If many objections could be made to
such developments, objections related to the degree of support of each
to antispecies theories, we observe through these examples that
the caricature of certain actions is to the detriment of
the expression of reasoning which if they probably will not be
considered always relevant are very far from a
gratuitous violence and sparing the sufferings of
the man.

We can reread the developments of:
Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka, translated by Cahiers
