“Over half a million bird sightings were reported” to the LPO during containment – Insurance for Pets

During confinement, the Bird Protection League proposed to individuals to identify species in the gardens. A bird counting device that has met with great success. The LPO calls on the French to continue.

“More than half a million observations have been reported to us, there are more than 80,000 gardens registered on the program”, welcomed this Friday, May 22 on franceinfo Laurent Couzi, ornithologist and manager of the knowledge service of the Bird Protection League, about the device for counting birds offered to individuals during confinement. During this participatory study, the French did not observe “of rare species” from their gardens, but “very common birds”. The objective of this program was rather to listen “the background noise of common birds around us to take a look at how they are doing and to make an indicator of the health of this group”, explains Laurent Couzi.

He calls on the French to continue these observations, “to spend ten minutes looking at what is in your garden”, “to be attentive to these species” even during deconfinement, proposing “the last weekend of May, a new count”. Attention coupled with a few gestures in favor of the environment. Laurent Couzi thus claims to the French who have a garden of “leave a patch of lawn not mowed”, “to avoid the use of so-called phytosanitary products, which kill either vegetation or insects”. “Most bird species during nesting will consume a lot of insects”, he explains.

Laurent Couzi and his team from the LPO are now trying to find out what confinement “produced on birds”.We can’t answer like that right away, it’s a bit early “, he explains. “With the Museum, we are trying to organize ourselves to do this analytical work, probably when the birds have lowered their activity a little and when they will give us some respite”, he specifies.

Asked about the organization on January 11, 2021 by France of a One Planet Summit in Marseille, on biodiversity, Laurent Couzi welcomes the announcement of Emmanuel Macron, believing that these summits are “important”. He ensures that the Bird Protection League is “invited” at this summit. “It is important, as for containment, that everyone takes responsibility” and realizes “gestures easy to do on a daily basis, even if it does not change the world because locally, on its scale, we can have effects very, very quickly”, he notes. But he claims to know “limits” of these peaks.

Slaughterhouses are a source of corona infections worldwide – Insurance for Pets

The meat processing industry appears to be a source of fire for corona infections in several countries. Nieuwsuur reported yesterday about a slaughterhouse of the Dutch Vion in Bad Bramstedt, Germany, where all staff are quarantined. Vion, which was one of the funders of the farmers’ protest against nitrogen policy, employs 108 Romanian temporary workers at its facility in Bad Bramstedt.

There are also major problems at other German slaughterhouses. For example, in April hundreds of Romanians fell ill in a slaughterhouse in Birkenfeld. Because guest workers are often housed together in small rooms, the risk of contamination is high. “Too many people with too few toilets, showers and common areas,” Marcel Mansouri of the NGG union summarizes the problem. Employees are also transported to work in small vans.

It also goes completely wrong in other countries. For example, this week 54 workers at a slaughterhouse in Fleury-les-Aubrais were found to be infected with the corona virus. It was by no means the first meat processing company with an outbreak in France. For example, 69 workers fell ill at a slaughterhouse in Côtes-d’Armor.

At least thirty slaughterhouse workers have already died in the United States. In half of the American areas where the coronavirus has hit hardest so far, the outbreak can be traced to a slaughterhouse. Nearly 500 workers were infected at a slaughterhouse in Minnesota. Because many slaughterhouses in the U.S. have closed due to the corona outbreak, farmers decide to suffocate their chickens by shutting off ventilation.

Stiftung Warentest tests cat food: cats would not buy Felix – consumers – Insurance for Pets

Your own cook, four freshly cooked dishes to choose from, silver bowls instead of bowl: Choupette, the cat of the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, shared the luxury life of her master. The fashion designer himself took care of his loved one for the time after his death: In the will of the designer, who died a good year ago, Lagerfeld guarantees the Burmese cat a maid, a housekeeper and a cook. Choupette, who had also photographed Lagerfeld as an advertising model for Opel, now resides in the south of France. In her new domicile, she should not lack anything either.

These are the best offers

It would also be easier – at least if the cat lady lived in Germany. Quickly to Kaufland, Edeka, Rossmann, Lidl or Rewe, buy a few bags, cans or aluminum boxes with wet food, and Choupette would be “very well” supplied. At least that’s what the testers from Stiftung Warentest think after testing 30 different wet foods. They swear by cheap chain store feed. The only “very good” branded food comes from Kitekat.

[Was gibt es Neues in Ihrem Kiez? Das sagen Ihnen unsere Tagesspiegel-Bezirksnewsletter. Kostenlos und kompakt:]

You can buy that too

With whiskas and sheba, the animal feed and chocolate bar producer Mars also has two other at least “good” brands on offer. According to the Stiftung Warentest, the feed from Aldi, Netto, Iams, Zooroyal, Animonda and the organic feed from dm are also good. You can buy everything, say the experts.

Jetzt kostenlos anmelden:]

14.7 million cats live in Germany, no pet is more popular. Men and women spend 1.6 billion euros a year on food alone, with the lion’s share in wet food.

What cats need

Cats are carnivores. You need a good mix of animal protein, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. The best would be mice. But on the supermarket shelf or at the discounter, where cat owners mostly shop, there is no such thing as a mouse.

Because only slaughterhouse waste is processed in pet food, no other animal is killed for dogs and cats. And since mice are not on the human menu, the four-legged friends have to catch the supplies themselves.

The master and his kitty: Karl Lagerfeld, who has since passed away, loved his cat. Choupette even had his own …Photo: picture alliance / Eventpress

Cats have their own peculiarities

The human can opener and bag ripper are quite capable of suffering when it comes to the peculiarities of their animals. Some cats only eat when they are petted, others only start to lick when some ham or a snack bar is crumbled over the food. Some house tigers like to eat in human company, others insist on privacy. However, many have one thing in common: they do not like to change the type of feed.

Favorite prey: Cats prefer to eat mice.Photo: picture alliance / Bodo Marks / dp

These brands are poor

That is why all the cat friends are facing tough times now, who are particularly fond of their roommates and who are not afraid to buy expensive branded food.

Of the six products that were punished with “poor”, five are branded goods. Nestlé in particular is disappointed. The daughter Purina delivered two defective products with Felix and Gourmet Gold, even the best Nestlé food, Purina One, only managed one satisfactory and was thus far behind the cheaper discounter meals.

Not only Felix and Gourmet cats should leave their paws, Vitakraft, Bozita, Miamor and Fressnapf are also deficient, warn consumer advocates. They fear that the feed can even make the animals sick. Bozita, Felix, Gourmet Gold and Purina One contain a lot of water-soluble phosphorus (just like the “sufficient” offers from the Futterhaus and Penny). This can harm the cats’ kidneys. Around a third of the older animals already have chronic kidney disease. “Felix” also contains too much calcium, Gourmet Gold too much calcium and sodium.

I don’t like it: It’s not that easy to get cats used to new food.Photo: dpa-tmn

What Nestlé says

The test results are devastating for Nestlé, whose gourmet gold has now failed the Stiftung Warentest for the second time in a row. When asked, it was said that the devaluations of the products could not be traced. “The legislator does not specify a maximum value for the phosphorus content in the diet of dogs and cats, but only a minimum value,” says Purina. “We will certainly adhere to this in order to guarantee an adequate supply of nutrients.” But too much harm as well as too little, emphasizes the Stiftung Warentest.
But how do you get the cat used to the new food? You can mix the new feed with the old one and gradually change the mixing ratio. Sometimes it also helps to warm the food.

Or you do it like Lagerfeld: four fresh meals for the kitty, three times a day, but not cooked by the staff, but yourself. This is not only true love for cats, but also prevents boredom at home, even in corona times.

Treat your dog or cat from home thanks to the veterinary advice! – Treat your dog – Insurance for Pets

Your dog, cat, NAC or horse has a health concern, and you want the advice of a veterinarian to treat it without leaving your home? We have the solution!

We all have a busy daily life, with lots of activities and obligations that take us time. And it’s often during a particularly busy week that extra tasks get added to the to-do list!

If your dog or cat has a health problem and you don’t have enough time to take him to the veterinarian, video veterinary advice is a good way to get the advice of a medical professional without leaving your home.

How to use veterinary advice from a distance?

There are several options for interacting with a remote animal health professional, such as contacting your regular vet over the phone, or using a service dedicated to veterinary telecontrol.

CallMyVet is a mobile application that can be downloaded to a smartphone, and from which you can contact a veterinarian in just a few minutes. Just create a profile for your animal, then select the problem for which you want to have the advice of a veterinarian. After entering your credit card, you are immediately put in touch with an available veterinarian, whose qualifications are verified by the application team.

So, for € 19, pet owners can talk to a veterinarian the time it takes to get the best advice for their dog, cat or rodent, 24 hours a day.

It’s a huge time saver when you have a busy schedule, and allows your pet to be cared for at any time, not just during the opening hours of a veterinary practice.

If your pet does not support traveling by car and going to the veterinarian, having it treated remotely eliminates a lot of stress, for you and for him, in addition to avoiding the risk of contamination in the room. waiting at the cabinet.

In addition, as it is a veterinary service, CallMyVet is covered by insurance and mutual insurance for pets, depending on the level of protection chosen. All you need is an iPhone or Android smartphone and an Internet connection!

Recently updated, CallMyVet now includes a virtual health book for your animal, with tracking of its weight, vaccines, and dewormers. It will even soon be possible to find a calendar of veterinary appointments, as well as documents related to the animal.

When to use video veterinary advice?

If your little companion has an urgent health problem, such as ingesting toxic products or serious stomach problems, seeking the advice of an online veterinarian right away could save your pet’s life.

The speed of contact with a veterinarian allows you to be as reactive as possible, and to make emergency gestures that can change everything thanks to the help of your veterinarian from a distance.

The health professional on the phone will tell you how to do this, and whether to take your pet to an emergency veterinary office or not.

You can also seek the advice of an animal health professional remotely for any non-urgent problem, such as itching, crusting or other skin conditions, weight gain, or anything else you are concerned about.

We must differentiate the teleconsultation from teleconsultation

It is important to distinguish the teleconference from teleconsultation: the first allows the veterinarian to give you an opinion on the health status of your animal, but does not authorize him to provide a prescription or establish a diagnosis.

As for teleconsultation, it is a complete remote veterinary consultation, conducted with the strictest respect for the Order of Veterinarians and the values of the profession.

Teleconsultation is now authorized by the state for a period of 18 months, provided that the veterinarian consulted has seen the animal at least once in the 365 days preceding the remote appointment.

This teleconsultation allows the caregiver to provide prescriptions to his patients, even from a distance. Soon, it will be possible to make an appointment for a veterinary teleconsultation with the Callmyvet application, to have your pet treated with ease.

Of course, the healthcare professional that you will consult online will be able to tell you if a physical consultation of the animal is essential, as well as rapid management to start the necessary treatment.

Remote veterinary advice is therefore a great way to be reassured in a short time that your dog, cat, NAC or horse does not have a more serious problem!

So to avoid time-consuming trips, use veterinary advice on video, to save time and serenity in relation to the health of your animal.

VIDEO. Red furnaces, true architectural birds – Insurance for Pets

#Pollution Alert

Contaminated rivers or soils, abandoned industrial waste … Do you live near a polluted site?

Native to South America, the Fourniers regroup eight species including the Red Fournier, emblem of Argentina. Their oven-shaped nests are the origin of their name. To make them, these little architects work tirelessly for several weeks. They start by collecting mud or dung, which they mix with different materials, such as straw, to form a mortar. They then deposit it layer after layer to shape this structure.

A perfectly organized interior

But it is mainly inside that hides the most important part: a curved wall forms a chamber designed to house the eggs. Accessible only by a narrow opening, this part of the nest is thus protected from predators. Their nests would also have a thermal utility: the interior temperature is warmer than outside and know less variations.

Fourniers rarely re-use a nest from year to year. They usually build a new one before each laying, often next to or even above the old one. Other species of birds can then take advantage of the old nests to lay eggs in their turn.

Host family for pets of corona patients must prevent them from getting sick: ‘Pets are victims of humans here’ – Insurance for Pets

Dogs and cats can become infected with corona through humans. To reduce the risks for them, animal shelter Crailo has set up a platform. “Pets from corona patients can now go to host families until their owners are better again.”

Rianne Steenbeek of the animal shelter Crailo already knew that dogs and cats can become infected with the coronavirus. The cats in New York, the cat in Belgium and the dog in Hong Kong had all received COVID-19 from their sick owners. Steenbeek is not surprised by the message from Minister Carola Schouten that the first cases have now also been discovered in the Netherlands, but she thinks it is sad. “The three Dutch cats lived on the mink farm where earlier this month the mink became infected by the staff and the dog became infected by his sick owner. So it is the people who infect the animals, and that gives a responsibility.”

What the word ‘zoonosis’ has to do with the coronavirus

“Not in bed, no licking and no stroking”

Dr. Herman Egberink of the Virology Laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht is a veterinary virologist and studies animal viruses. He will conduct further research into corona infections among pets. “And especially pets in a household where there are human covid patients. Testing cats for corona will be part of the research. We hope to gain more insight into the number of infections. But we only do that with cats. who have a sick owner. There is no point in testing all pets that are sniffling. “

For corona patients with pets, Egberink recommends keeping the dog or cat indoors to prevent other infections from taking place. “Now if you say, try to avoid contact, do it with your pet. Don’t leave it in bed, don’t lick it, and don’t pet it.”

dr. Herman Egberink of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Utrecht

“The pet is really the victim here”

Research shows that infected cats can also infect other cats, although that number is very small. So far, no case of animal-to-human contamination is known, Egberink says. “The pet is really a victim of humans here and not the other way around.”

To reduce the contamination risks for pets, Rianne Steenbeek has therefore started a platform on which people can register as a host family for animals with a corona patient as their owner. “You do not want to put your great-aunt’s dog in a busy shelter, which is pathetic and not good for such an animal. It just has to be taken care of in a homely environment and waiting for a blanket to heat up until its owner is better again. “

Press the shelters

70 host families have already registered in ‘t Gooi. Steenbeek hopes that other asylums in the Netherlands will follow suit. “We hope that this will reduce the pressure on the shelters and increase the welfare of the pets.”

What to do if you think your pet has the coronavirus? – Insurance for Pets

In the Netherlands, there are already a few pets that have contracted the coronavirus. Although the chance that your pet will be infected with the coronavirus is very small, it is of course nice to know what to do in such a situation.

Therefore, here a few useful tips from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

Most important points

Are there people in your household who have complaints that are appropriate for the corona virus? And your pet gets sick too? Then, according to the RIVM, there is a small chance that it concerns the coronavirus in your pet. In this case it is important that all housemates avoid intensive contact (such as hugging and licking) with the sick animal. If possible, it is wise to have a non-sick roommate take care of the animal. Also consider the following things:

  • Good hygiene is now extra important (so wash and disinfect your hands regularly and clean well at home).
  • Don’t let your pet run free outside. So keep your cat indoors and let your dog out on a leash. If you have corona-like complaints yourself, you should not go outside anyway. In this case you will have to arrange someone to walk your pet for you.
  • Make sure your pet doesn’t go to a place where many animals are together, such as a boarding house or dog walking service.
  • Does your pet have severe shortness of breath and / or diarrhea? Then contact the vet by phone. He or she will then assess whether the pet’s complaints fit the coronavirus.

Also read: why you should think carefully if you now take a pet

Risk of infecting others

If you have a cat that is infected but does not show any signs of disease, it is not contagious. The chance that a sick cat can transmit the coronavirus to a human is very small. A dog probably cannot transmit the virus to another dog. There is also no evidence that a dog can transmit the coronavirus to a human. Antibodies against the new coronavirus have so far been found in one dog in the Netherlands, which means that the animal has been infected with the coronavirus.

Buried dead dog in the suitcase – Insurance for Pets

An unknown owner buried his dead dog in a suitcase in the nature reserve near Gardelegen. The investigation is ongoing.

Gardelegen l Ramona S. regularly goes for a walk with her dachshund in the cellar mountains near Gardelegen (Altmarkkreis Salzwedel). In wind and weather, even on that day almost three weeks ago. The dachshund pulls on the leash at the rest area in the Kämmereiforst, where the heather flower festivals were celebrated until a few years ago. He wants to go to a tree, starts sniffing and digging. Ramona S. (name of the editor known) takes a closer look at what her dog is doing and why. She discovers cans of cat food, a bluish-colored line, a food bowl – and a closed suitcase, half buried in the ground. She is afraid to take the suitcase out and open it. But she already has a bad suspicion. She quickly goes home, the municipal regulatory office informs. Nothing happens for days. She informs the veterinary office and police officers of a patrol that she meets on one of her walks in the basement mountains. She reports back to the regulatory office. Then the space is cleared, only the suitcase is still half buried in the ground. Again she calls the regulatory office and also turns to the Gardelegener Volksstimme editorial office.

Florian Kauer, responsible for order, security and general security in the administration, sets off late Wednesday afternoon of the previous week. And what he finds there leaves him speechless: a dead dog, packed in a suitcase, buried in the Natura 2000 reserve. “It is a huge mess to dispose of an animal so unworthily in a place with a lot of traffic,” says Kauer, who has never experienced anything like this in his term of office, as he confirms when asked by the popular vote. It is a mixed breed dog with dark fur, about the size of a pug. The dog is not chipped.

Investigations are ongoing

The investigation has started. Because the owner of the animal violated several legal bases, including the “Animal By-Products Disposal Act and the Animal By-Products Disposal Ordinance”. It regulates where pets, including dogs, can be disposed of, explains Kauer. Among other things, dogs may be burned in an incinerator, buried in a place specially approved for this by the competent authority, such as animal cemeteries, or on the animal owner’s property.

However, this is not allowed in water protection areas and not in the immediate vicinity of public paths and squares. The animals should be covered with a layer of earth that is at least 50 centimeters thick. “Depending on the incident, anyone who violates these regulations can be fined or at most sentenced to a custodial sentence of up to one year,” says Kauer. In this case, he also included the district veterinary office. Official veterinarian Ramón Rulff has arranged a section of the dog to determine the cause of death because there is suspicion of killing contrary to animal welfare. “We work closely with the district to solve this disgusting act,” said Kauer.

He now hopes for clues from the population. “If you can give hints, even if they are so small, please let me know. I personally follow up on any information, ”assures Kauer. And further: “And if a cause is found, the maximum penalty comes.” However, this could be a little lower if the dog owner volunteers. Kauer rejects the criticism that the regulatory office acted too late. He himself had the case on April 28 on the table. An employee was then on site and disposed of the garbage, but unfortunately overlooked the case. Anyone who can provide information is asked to report to the municipal regulatory office on 03907/71 61 40.
